Men's Soccer Wins Important Home Match over Pioneers

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- On a cool and overcast evening in the Don Shula Stadium in University Heights, John Carroll University Men's Soccer took on a tough Marietta Pioneers team. The Blue Streaks entered the day with a 12-game win streak against the Pioneers.

With a 2-0 home win, the Blue Streaks stretched the streak to 13 matches.

"Marietta is a very good team. They tested us for 90 minutes tonight," said Associate Head Coach Dejan Mladenovic '06. "They are really well coached and are going to be a major factor in the OAC playoff picture."

Last time out, the Blue Streaks beat the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace, 1-0, while the Marietta Pioneers bested Mount Union, 2-1.

A yellow card three minutes into the game for Elliot Britton for Marietta set the tone early for a chippy battle between the two sides. Another yellow card came out just 11 minutes after the first. This one was given to JCU midfielder Jared Ianiro

With 24 minutes remaining, the first real scoring chance of the day presented itself with Jared Mattei getting the first shot on goal. Thomas Williams made a nice diving save for Mareitta with the rebound bouncing to Izac Coleman. Marietta's defense took care of the rebound shot to keep the game level.

Some controversy came with 19 minutes left, as Marietta got a free kick right outside the box to by the right corner flag, but the stout Blue Streak defense took care of business clearing the ball.

Jared Mattei put the Blue Streaks up 1-0 in the 32nd minute. He was assisted by Lawrence Cersosimo II, and William Grubbs. Grubbs' free kick from about 20 yards out found Cersosimo, who backfooted it to Mattei for a beautiful goal.

The Blue Streaks buried the chance after breaking down the Marietta defense throughout the first half. The goal came after JCU tabbed 7 shots, 5 on goal. In comparison, Marietta only had one shot and none on goal to that point in the game.

The main story of the first half was the Blue Streaks' defense as Izac Coleman, Stephen Schutt, Daniel Kalic, Benjamin Hryszko, holding midfielder William Turrittin, and goalkeeper Connor Robinson frustrated the Pioneers as they held them to only one shot, and no shots on goal.

The first real chance of the second half came 10 minutes in with Michael Burrington heading it just over the top of the bar. Head Coach Hector Marinaro got a yellow card with just under 30 minutes remaining. It definitely fired up the Blue Streaks, as Jared Ianiro got an insurance goal with 28:53 remaining in the second half.

William Turrittin fired in a deep free kick to the head of Michael Burrington, who headed a pass to Ianiro. The goal was Ianiro's second of the season, Turrittin's second assist, and Burrington's first assist.

The Blue Streaks continued their dominance in defense in the second half, as they allowed only two shots to be fired off, and only one of those was on goal. The defensive work rate was outstanding in the win as the Blue Streaks continue their undefeated season. Connor Robinson picked up his fifth clean sheet of the year. He now has five clean sheets in six games. The Blue Streaks on the season have scored 13 goals while only conceding 1.

"We are extremely proud of how our young players have stepped up," said Mladenovic. "We started 5 underclassmen tonight and they stepped up in a big way."

The Blue Streaks next game is Thursday April 8 at home in the Don Shula Stadium against Heidelberg.
