Women's Soccer Duels to 1-1 Tie After 110-Minute Monday Matinee

MARIETTA, Ohio -- A Monday afternoon road matchup with Marietta College offered plenty of intrigue.

In a back-and-forth affair, John Carroll University Women's Soccer tied the Pioneers, 1-1.

The game required two overtimes, and still could not be settled after a pitched battle.

The Blue Streaks are now .500 on the season, with a 3-3-1 record in 2021. Two games remain in the regular season.

The first half did not have any goals, but it did not lack for action. The Blue Streaks tallied 9 shots, including 4 on target. Katie Conkle of Marietta made all 4 saves. Each team enjoyed a pair of corner kicks, but the four combined corners did not result in any goals. Marietta managed just one shot, none on target, in the opening 45 minutes.

The start of the second half featured a good start offensively by John Carroll, but Marietta started to ramp up the offense. In the 56th minute, the Pioneers notched their first shot on Mackenzie Stease

After allowing another shot in the 60th minute, Casey Lindstrom tabbed a shot in the 62nd minute. Marietta notched another on target in the 65th minute before breaking through in the 71st minute.

Theresa LaGreca found the back of the net off an assist from Olivia Alberto to snatch the lead for the Pioneers. The goal was LaGreca's first goal of the year.

With less than 20 minutes left to play, Blue Streaks pushed the tempo. Grace Monnin notched shots in the 77th and 78th minutes, setting the stage for Brittany Dufalla

In the 81st minute with time dwindling, Dufalla provided a clutch goal. The junior scored off an assist from Lindstrom on a free kick from the top of the 18-yard box, tying the contest at 1 goal apiece with under 10 minutes to play on a shot from the 6-yard box.

Dufalla has been special all season long, and her heroics continued with the goal, her third of the campaign.

Each team had chances in the final 9:32 of the contest, but neither team could break through. The contest required overtime. In the initial overtime period, John Carroll started strong. Monnin put a shot on net in the opening minute, but Conkle turned it away. Marietta then gained some traction, with a pair of corner kicks and a pair of opportunities. Dufalla responded with a shot on target in the 96th minute, but the remainder of the period ended without any scoring.

In the second overtime period, the Blue Streaks enjoyed chances. Kennedy Newhart had a shot blocked in the 101st and possessed the ball for a time. Marietta got it back and got a couple of shots, making Stease make a save. In the waning moments, the Blue Streaks tabbed a couple of corner kicks and a Monnin shot on net. Gabriella Walter also headed a shot wide in the final moment, but the contest ended in a time.

For the full 110 minutes, John Carroll enjoyed a 27-14 margin in shots, and 12-5 in shots on target. JCU had more corner kicks, 7-4, but also had more fouls, 11-8.

The Blue Streaks will be back at it on Thursday, heading to Heidelberg University for a 7 p.m. contest in the penultimate game of the regular season.
