Two home runs in game two ensures twin-bill split with Heidelberg at home

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Home run shots by Justin Hanley and Henry Haracz propelled the John Carroll University Baseball Team to a win in game two of a twin-bill with Heidelberg.

In game one, the Blue Streaks fell 11-5 but a pair of four-run innings in the second game secured a 12-6 win at Schweickert Field on May 1.

John Carroll improved to 13-15-1 on the season after today's set of games and 10-14-1 in the OAC. Tomorrow, the Blue and Gold will play the Student Princes in Tiffin in a double-header format.

Game One

Six runs in the final two innings erased a chance at a win for John Carroll.

For most of the game, every time the Student Princes scored, the Blue Streaks had an answer.

With an early two-run deficit, Haracz quickly answered in the bottom of the first with an RBI single down the left side that scored Erik Daugenti. Heidelberg held John Carroll scoreless in the bottom of the second, but it was not long before the Blue Streaks cracked the scoreboard again.

An RBI single by Tyler Cyrus in the bottom of the third inning tied the game at two. Then in the bottom of the fourth, Anderson led off the inning with a double and Sam Heaton followed-up with a single. Daugenti continued the base knock streak with an RBI single that gave the Blue and Gold a 3-2 lead.

Meanwhile, Mitch Midea only allowed one hit in innings 2-4. Midea pitched 4.2 innings and delivered 10 strikeouts. However, Heidelberg eventually found some momentum.

The Student Princes tacked on three runs in the fifth inning and took a 5-3 lead. Once again, John Carroll responded.

In the bottom of the sixth, Justin Hanley had a two RBI double that tied the game back up at five. With the help of John Merrill and Sylvan Wiley — who each had two strikeouts — the game remained tied at two.

Heidelberg broke the silence with a four-run eighth inning and took the lead. The Blue Streak bats were also silenced the rest of the way as the Student Princes came away with the game one win.

Anderson continued his late season surge with a three-hit game at the plate. Daugenti, Hanley, Haracz, Sam Heaton and Joe Olsavsky all recorded a pair of base hits as well.

Game Two

For the second game, Heidelberg picked right back up where they left off on the offensive end.

The Student Princes opened up the game with three runs. This time around, the Blue Streaks accompanied Heidelberg on the scoring sheet.

Heaton led off the bottom of the first off with a triple to right center field. The following at-bat, Daugenti had a sacrifice line out to left field that scored Heaton and the Blue Streaks began to chip away at the lead.

With the bases loaded, Cyrus kept the ball in play and scored Haracz to cut the Heidelberg lead to one. The next at-bat, Logan LaMere hit a double to left field that scored Hanley and Olsavsky. The Blue and Gold took the 4-3 advantage.

John Carroll added on to the score with one run in the second, third and fourth innings. Hanley hit a solo shot in the fourth for his sixth home run of the season.

In the top of the fifth, Heidelberg answered all three of those runs but the Blue Streaks still held a one-run edge (7-6).

The Blue Streaks didn't just answer. They answered with four runs; Haracz accounted for three of them.

Haracz left no doubt with a three-run home run that pulled Blue Streaks ahead by five. Earlier in the inning, Heaton had an RBI single.

After the seventh inning stretch, Olsavsky stretched the JCU lead to six runs with a two-out RBI double.

The Blue Streaks found some late trouble in the ninth inning. With two outs, the Student Princes rallied and loaded the bases. With ice in his veins, Jon Ambro struck out the final batter for the victory. Ambro went 4.1 scoreless innings, tallied six K's and only allowed four hits. Matthew Aukerman started the game and recorded six strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched.

Hanley led the offensive output in the second game with three hits. Anderson, Haracz and Heaton had a pair of base knocks.
