TIFFIN, Ohio -- Against stout competition, John Carroll University Men's Track & Field is off to a good start at the 2021 Ohio Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships.

The Blue Streaks stand in second place after Day 1, behind Mount Union by a nose.

But Day 2 will provide plenty of opportunties for the Blue Streaks to catch up and make history.

The Blue Streaks earned key points the field, beginning in the Long Jump. Willis Goodwin led the way with a leap of 6.73m, good for fourth place. Deven Ward followed closely behind in fifth, hopping 6.69m to notch four points for JCU. Jimmy Kartsonas rounded out the trio with a seventh-place jump of 6.27m. Zach Szafarski nabbed fifth in the Discus, heaving a toss of 41.20m.

Jacob Fritsch captured a victory in the Javelin Throw for the Blue Streaks. Fritsch hurled a throw of 52.49m, launching himself into first by 3.25m. His incredible feat locked down 10 points for the Men of Carroll.

Following the field events, Zach Gerber clinched a spot in the finals in the 110m hurdles. The junior snagged the eighth spot in the finals, racing in 15.66.

Not long after in the 100m dash prelims, Garrett Clark and Deven Ward went 1-2, as they've done many times this season. Clark clocked in at 10.77, with Ward following at 10.91. Kartsonas also wrapped up a spot in tomorrow's race with a seventh-place finish of 11.23.

Ian Pierson grabbed a gigantic win in the 3000m Steeplechase. The veteran strode past the competition with a winning time of 9:16.31, a full 15 seconds better than the field. Jake Darby tabbed a top-3 spot with a bronze time of 9:40.65.

Garrett Clark followed it up with a win, albeit in the prelims. The junior snapped a time of 21.73, besting the field to advance to the finals. Ward will also be racing tomorrow, papering a time of 22.15 for fourth. Mark Zahren barely missed the cut with a ninth-place time of 22.73.

In the 1000m (10k), Alex Phillip continued his standout sophomore campaign. Phillip eked out Hunter Moore of Otterbein by just over a second with a time of 29:45.57. Jamie Dailey secured third, crossing the line at 30:01.42. Jared Arnold (31:12.07) and Andrew Miner (31:19.86) scored fourth and seventh for the Blue and Gold, as well.

The full day of action concluded with the 4x800 relay. Caleb Correia, Gabe Ernest, Pat White, and John Shoemaker did great work. The quartet combined for a time of 7:47.07, picking up 8 points for the Blue Streaks.

When the dust settled, the Blue Streaks sat in second with 71 points, behind Mount Union (78).
