Softball Concludes Campaign with Unforgettable Win in Game 1 Against Muskingum

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- It was the most memorable win of the year and it could not have come at a better time.

On Senior Day, the John Carroll University Softball team took down second-place Muskingum University with a 12-4 mercy rule to secure a double-header split at Bracken Field on May 8. The Blue Streaks fell in Game 2 by a score of 5-3.

In Game 1, with the help of an impressive offensive output that featured seven runs in the fifth inning, senior Madison Eagle capped off her career with her second win of the season in the circle.

Fellow seniors Hannah Vicini recorded a hit in each game and Sydney Hall hangs up the cleats after being a role model leader for the Blue and Gold. Eagle and Hall are both standouts in the classroom as members of the ASN Jesuit Honors Society.

The Blue Streaks close out the regular season 10-26 (10-24 OAC) following today's set of games.

GAME 1

After falling down 1-0 following the top of the first inning, the Blue Streaks strung together three runs to take the lead.

Following a leadoff single by Gracie Bressoud, Kasyn Scarantine hit her first home run of the season giving the Blue Streaks a 2-1 lead. Emma Gurley continued the hot bats for JCU with a single and then stole a base advancing to second. Kristen Jesberger collected an RBI off of her double, which scored Gurley pushing the Blue and Gold up 3-1.

As a result of the early scoring spree, Muskingum's ace standout pitcher Leah Smith was pulled for Hannah Thomas, who entered into the game to pitch the rest of the first inning.

The Fighting Muskies offense didn't completely cool in the early parts of the game.

In the top of the third, Muskingum tied the game up at three. Then, after a scoreless half inning by JCU, the Fighting Muskies tacked on another run in the fourth to take a 4-3 advantage.

John Carroll grabbed their lead back in the bottom of the fourth when they recorded four hits and scored one run. The hits came from Crista Nativio, Bressoud, Jesberger and Gurley. Ultimately, Nativio, Bressoud and Nativio scored unearned RBI's and pushed them back in the 5-4 lead after four frames.

Eagle responded with a 1-2-3 fifth inning.

The bottom of the fifth was one of the most remarkable innings played by the Blue Streaks softball team this year. John Carroll recorded seven runs, five hits, and won the game by mercy.

Freshman Maddie Traub drew a walk to leadoff the stanza. Another first-year player for John Carroll, Ellie Robertson captured her second career hit as she singled, with Traub advancing into scoring position. Then, Nativio singled to load the bases.

Bressoud walked and JCU increased the lead to 6-4 and kept the bases full. Up came Scarantine, who captured her second hit of the day and third RBI as Robertson scored pushing them up 7-4.

The scoring streak continued as Jesberger had recorded her second double of the day that scored two runs.

After a Muskigum pitching change, Hougan had an RBI single to right field. Later on, Lauren Sienkiewicz walked with the bases loaded and ended the game.

Eagle came away with her second win of the and recorded a strikeout in the victory. John Carroll's hitting was led by Scarantine recording 3 RBI's and Jesberger who went 3-4 with three RBI's. Bressoud was 2-3 at the dish and crossed home plate three times.

Game 2

Muskingum's bats sounded off after falling mostly quiet in game two.

After three scoreless innings, the Fighting Muskies notched three hits and scored three runs to take the opening 3-0 lead in the fourth. At least one of those runs did not go unanswered.

In the bottom half of the inning, Hougan hit her first career home run with a solo shot to deep left field that marked JCU's only run of the game.

Both team's offenses were silent in the fifth and sixth innings but in the final frame, the Fighting Muskies added two more runs. Those two runs served great importance.

The Blue Streaks rallied in the bottom of the seventh with the help of a Nativio 2 RBI double with no outs. However, Muskingum closed out the inning by retiring the final three batters to secure the win.

Katie DeBord recorded a strikeout in her final start of the season. Offensively, Bressoud and Nativio led the way with their pair of extra base hits.
