UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Despite allowing an early goal, the John Carroll University men's soccer team was able to regain composure and tie 1-1 in double overtime against the Case Western Reserve University Spartans.
"We had a slow start, the first 15-20 minutes we were trying to figure things out, but I think that once we did, we dominated the majority of the game," said JCU head coach Dejan Mladenovic. "We probably deserved a little better of a result than we got tonight."
The Blue Streaks fell behind 18 minutes into the match as Case Western's Jacob Hall scored on an assist by Alex Lippiatt.
The Blue Streaks only managed one shot in the first half, but freshman Jack Foht made the most of the opportunity by finding the back of the net off of a header on a great pass by Daniel Kalic. This tied the score at 1-1 heading into halftime.
In the second half, John Carroll dominated possession but could not find the back of the net, coming up empty on 10 shots. Case Western's goalkeeper Sam Rojanasakdakul came up with three key saves in the half.
On the defensive side, the Blue Streak played extremely well in the second half as they limited the Spartans offense to only four shots.
Both teams did not have many chances in either overtime period as they combined for five shots total in the extra time.
John Carroll goalkeeper Connor Gynn finished the night with a career-high five saves.
"We learned a lot tonight from Case; they are a fantastic team managed by Carter Poe," said Mladenovic. "We want to play the toughest schedule possible because we want to learn about ourselves."
The Blue Streaks will hit the road and play Ohio Wesleyan, the 13th ranked team in the United Soccer Coaches poll, on Saturday September 18th at 7 pm in Delaware, Ohio.
