Volleyball Win Streak Comes to a Close in Home Opener

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- After going fou- for-four during the past weekend's Penn State Behrend tournament, the Blue Streaks' four-game win streak concluded in their first home game of the 2021 fall season.

This was the first time the Blue Streaks were able to play in front of a full crowd since the fall of 2019 due to COVID-19 restrictions. Fans flocked to the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center, making for a fun atmosphere.

In the match, the Blue Streaks fell 3-1 (25-23, 25-11, 25-20, 25-21) against the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan University.

Set One
The Blue Streaks kept up their hot start from the past weekend's tournament, winning the first set, 25-23. John Carroll started with a robust first set with a 9-3 lead, despite Ohio Wesleyan pulling within two, making the set 11-9. The Blue Streaks rattled off eight of the last 10 points to push them ahead, 19-11. Despite a comeback from the Battling Bishops, putting the game within one point (24-23), the Blue Streaks won courtesy of a Brooke Hjerpe kill.

Set Two
Ohio Wesleyan started the second set with a bang, scoring the first seven points of the stage. In response, Head Coach Michele Benoit took a timeout to settle the team.

OWU continued to thrive, building the lead further. With a 15-9 advantage, Ohio Wesleyan tagged on more points, pushing them ahead 21-9. In the latter stages, the Battling Bishops completed in the 25-11 win.

Set Three
The third set started in back-and-forth fashion, but OWU held the reigns again early, leading 6-4.

The Battling Bishops continued their offensive momentum in the middle of the set, picking up six straight points. OWU built a 12-4 advantage over the Blue and Gold, creating a tough road to a comeback for the Blue Streaks.

Ohio Wesleyan gave some ground to the Blue Streaks, and momentum swung a bit. John Carroll fought back into the set, but Ohio Wesleyan provided enough answers down the stretch to solidify a 25-20 conquest.

Set Four
JCU jumped out to a 5-4 early lead in the fourth set, with hopes of extending the match into five sets, as they've done many times this season.

But OWU wasted no time getting back into their offensive groove. Thanks to nice plays, Ohio Wesleyan snagged the lead and found the edge late in the set. OWU took a 23-17 lead over JCU, with hopes slimming for the Blue Streaks.

The Blue Streaks lifted their efforts behind a loud crowd, mounting a comeback by rattling off four straight points and putting the Blue and Gold within three (21-24). However, OWU snuffed out any attempt of a JCU comeback with an impressive kill to finish it off.

Cassi Calamunci led the JCU team in kills with 13, while Hjerpe added 10 on the night. As usual, Ally Bartolone topped the team in assists, logging 23.

Lexi MacDonald was the main effort behind the Blue Streaks' defense with 16 digs, and Anna Coughlin assisted with 14 as well.

John Carroll (6-4) will stay at home and face off against the Geneva Golden Tornados on Friday, September 17, at 7 p.m. at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.
