Volleyball's Tri-Match Ends in Saturday Split at Oberlin

OBERLIN, Ohio -- A busy weekend concluded on a positive note for the Blue Streaks.

John Carroll University Volleyball split two matches on Saturday. In the opener, the Blue Streaks fell in three sets to Oberlin: 25-27, 18-25, 19-25.

In the second match, the Blue Streaks rolled to a 3-0 sweep of North Park: 26-24, 25-19, 25-22.

MATCH 1: vs. Oberlin

Set One
The opening set proved to be a back-and-forth affair. Oberlin and John Carroll looked evenly matched, but the Blue Streaks gained traction as the set continued.

The homestretch of the set proved to be a seesaw, with plenty of strategy on both sides.

John Carroll tabbed three kills in four points to forge a 17-15 lead, causing Oberlin to cause a timeout. The Yeowomen fought back with a pair of nice plays, leading to a Blue Streaks timeout at 18-17 JCU. After the break, Oberlin got a pair of points before Cassi Calamunci authored a kill, evening things at 19-19. After a Jennifer Follmer kill set the score at 20-19 JCU, Oberlin burned its second timeout. Two straight Yeowomen kills led to JCU's second timeout.

A mere 25 points would not decide this battle of an opening set. In a memorable battle, the Yeowomen forged past the Blue Streaks with a 27-25 conquest in a well-fought matchup.

Set Two
The hosts utilized the momentum and fired ahead to a 5-2 lead in the second set. Oberlin held an edge as they rolled along in the set, upping the margin to four at 15-11. At that point, Head Coach Michele Benoit opted to call a timeout to rally her squad.

While John Carroll fought down the stretch, as Kailee Herbst provided a few kills, Oberlin completed the set victory. The Yeowomen rolled into the third set with a 2-0 lead, thanks to the 25-18 win in the second stanza.

Set Three
In the third set, the Yeowomen looked to complete the sweep. The hosts continued the strong momentum from the previous two sets.

The Blue Streaks fought hard after falling behind early on. Calamunci, Herbst, and Jessica Liddle registered kills to narrow the margin to 20-15, leading to an Oberlin timeout.

But despite's JCU best efforts, the Yeowomen finished things off. The hosts completed a 25-19 victory, earning the 3-0 sweep.

Looking at the overall stats for the match, Herbst led the team with 10 kills, while Calamunci followed with nine. Ally Bartolone topped the squad with 21 assists and 2 aces. Anna Coughlin (14) and Bartolone (12) each hit double digits in digs.

MATCH 2 vs. North Park

Set One
The Blue Streaks wanted to finish the weekend strong after a pair of losses, and they started off the third of three weekend matches with a bang.

North Park provided a strong battle in the opening set. Like just about every other set this weekend, the Blue Streaks fought with alacrity and were met with an evenly matched foe. After falling behind 9-8, the Blue Streaks snagged four straight points to take the possession.

From there, the Blue Streaks never relinquished the lead, pushing it ahead to 22-16. North Park fired off four straight points, but JCU pushed it back to 24-21. The Vikings scored three straight points before the Blue Streaks found the killer instinct, earning two straight points, including a Bartolone kill, to get the 26-24 win.

Set Two
The second stanza began as the first, with plenty of back-and-forth play. The first 16 points were split exactly evenly.

The teams traded points before JCU gained traction in the middle of the set, with four straight points to push the score to 19-15.

In the waning moments, Herbst tallied three kills to help put the nail in the coffin for the Blue Streaks. John Carroll walked away with the 25-19 conquest, one set away from the sweep.

Set Three
Sensing the possibility of a sweep, North Park roared out of the gate in the third set, charing to leads of 8-4 and 12-7.

Then, John Carroll turned on the jets. The Blue Streaks forced the Vikings into errors, slowly chipping away at the deficit. The Blue Streaks tied things up at 16 with nice play.

The set flipped back and forth, with neither team going on much of a run. With the score at 22-all, the Blue Streaks found the next gear. Herbst and Calamunci registered kills and a block by Liddle and Calamunci got three straight points for the victory, 25-22.

For the match, three Blue Streaks led the offense -- Herbst led the team with 13 kills, Calamunci contributed 11 kills, and Hjerpe managed nine. Bartolone collected a team-best 33 assists. Coughlin topped the team with 26 digs, while Calamunci followed with 12.

With the Saturday split, the Blue Streaks are now 7-6 on the season. Ohio Athletic Conference play begins on Wednesday at Muskingum.
