Volleyball Toppled by Case Western Reserve at Home

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The much-anticipated matchup between two non-conference rivals from the East Side of Cleveland ended in a 3-0 loss for John Carroll.

The Blue Streaks to Case Western Reserve University Spartans despite a good effort, 19-25, 24-26, 20-25.

With the loss, JCU drops to 7-10 on the season.

Set 1

The Blue Streaks started off the first set slowly, giving up four straight points to the Spartans right off of the bat. However, they were able to battle back and tie the set at six apiece.

In an attempt to stop the Blue Streaks run, Case Western Reserve called a timeout while they were down 8-6. That timeout would help the Spartans, because they would go on a run and take the lead 14-12.

With the momentum lost, Head Coach Michele Benoit took a timeout. Coming out of the timeout, the Spartans continued full steam ahead. The score moved to 19-14, and another timeout was taken by the Blue Streaks.

The Spartans' energy was just too much down the stretch, and the first set ended 25-18.

Set 2

At the beginning of the second set, the teams traded points back and forth. The score was 9-6 Spartans in the early going.

The pace of the set would stay the same with quick play. The Blue Streaks had a 15-13 lead before the Spartans took a timeout.

John Carroll's run continued, as 3 unanswered points were scored by the Blue Streaks before another timeout was taken by the Spartans.

Coming out of their second timeout, the Spartans battled back. The Blue Streaks' lead dwindled to 21-20 going into the final stage of the set.

Two timeouts were taken by John Carroll, but the close set ended in a win for the Spartans, 26-24. The Blue Streaks had several clean plays leading to thunderous kills. But the Spartans enjoyed consistently solid play, weathering the JCU storm and getting the needed points late.

Set 3

With the Spartans being ahead two sets to none, the Blue Streak' backs were against the wall from the get-go. The Spartans also sensed an opportunity for a quick win, and roared out of the gate accordingly.

The Spartans' momentum continued at the beginning of the third set, as the visitors quickly gained a 9-2 lead over the Blue Streaks before a John Carroll timeout was taken.

Coming out of the break, John Carroll fought back, but the Spartans kept their lead. The score was 18-13 before a timeout was taken by the Blue Streaks.

John Carroll came out of the respite strong. The hosts narrowed the Spartans' lead to three with several nice plays, and looked to be in position to steal the set.

But then the Spartans made the final push necessary to secure the set and the match, 25-20.

Looking at the overall stats, Kailee Herbst topped the team with 12 kills. Jessica Liddle enjoyed a nice day with 9 kills, while Brooke Hjerpe added 8 kills. Jillian Kellick and Steph Conley each contributed 4 apiece.

Ally Bartolone anchored the middle with 35 assists, adding 11 digs. Anna Coughlin played well in the back line with 28 kills. Herbst also tallied 15, and Lexi MacDonald earned 12.

With the loss in the rearview mirror, John Carroll will hit the reset button. The Blue Streaks will head to the Elmhurst University Tournament this weekend, with the first matchup against Coe College on Friday, October 1.
