Men's Soccer Battles to a Home Draw with Rochester in a Sunday Matinee

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- In a scoreless double overtime match, the John Carroll University Men's Soccer team tied the University of Rochester Yellowjackets in a non-conference game at Don Shula Stadium.

After the 110-minute scoreless tie, the Blue Streaks now stand at 1-0-1 on the year.

The Blue Streaks' defense controlled and contained the Yellowjackets in an uneventful first half, while JCU looked to find a spark of momentum on the attacking end.

With limited shots on goal, the Blue and Gold found a scoring opportunity with only six minutes remaining in the half.

Senior midfielder Larry Cersosimo II broke away from the defense and hit a shot low right of the net, which was deflected by Rochester goalkeeper Santino Lupica-Tondo. The ball ricocheted to the middle of the box, where senior forward Michael Burrington found himself in perfect position for another attempt, which was saved by Lupica-Tondo once again.

The tempo of the game shifted with these two Blue Streak strikes and the Yellowjackets got their own opportunity at a score.

With his back turned towards the goal, senior midfielder Caden Dowd had a turnaround shot that went low right of the John Carroll net with just under two minutes left in the first half.

As the buzzer sounded for halftime, the scoreboard read 0-0 and the teams returned to the locker rooms to prepare for the second half battle.

Returning to the field, physicality and efficiency became the name of the game for the second half.

Both squads were able to break down the opposing defenses to earn more shots on goal, but with no finishing successes.

In a valiant team effort, the Blue and Gold weaved the ball up the sideline, locating sophomore defender Daniel Kalic outside the top of the box. Lupica-Tondo had another amazing save for Rochester as Kalic's shot went center high, giving John Carroll a sliver of hope for mere seconds.

The Yellowjacket offense began pushing into their attacking zone, pressuring the Blue Streak defense.

JCU midfielder Stephen Schutt made the play of the game with a sliding tackle to save a shot attempt by the Yellowjackets, sending the ball out of bounds for a corner kick. Schutt's incredible effort kept the clean sheet in impressive fashion.

Trying to get into a rhythm, Rochester sent the ball flying across the end line, finding sophomore midfielder Nick Swanger on the back post. John Carroll senior goalkeeper Connor Robinson made the save and sent the ball back on offense.

Continuing this back and forth play, both offenses struggled to break free of the scoring affliction that plagued the entire game.

At the end of regulation, neither team had found the back of the net, sending the match into overtime.

In similar fashion to the rest of the game, the squads played 10 more minutes and still no goals, sending the match into double overtime.

The physicality was kicked up yet again and there were more big saves.

Rochester forward Colin Canning had the chance to end the game when he broke away from the John Carroll back line and was 1-on-1 with Robinson. Canning passed across the box to his teammate on the opposite post for a wide open shot, but sophomore defender Izac Coleman came sprinting in with a sliding save, sending the ball out of bounds.

This was the last true scoring opportunity for either team, as the game ended 0-0 in double overtime.

The John Carroll Men's Soccer Team will look to improve their record as they will travel to Pittsburgh, PA to take on Carnegie Mellon University in a non-conference matchup on Thursday, September 9 at 7 p.m.
