Women's Soccer Finishes Indiana Tour with a Win Thanks to Monnin's Heroics

FRANKLIN, Ind. -- By Drezdan Dale
Franklin, Ind. -- Playing through all 90 minutes of regulation in soccer can be a challenge, especially at the back end of a back-to-back. Fortunately for the Blue Streaks, they have trained to play through the final whistle, and Sunday proved that.

After 88 minutes without any scoring, junior midfielder Grace Monnin came through in the clutch with what proved to be the game winning goal in the 89th minute.

The dramatic ending capped off a 1-0 hard-fought victory for the John Carroll Women's Soccer team against the Franklin College Grizzlies, improving the Blue Streaks' record to 2-1 on the season.

The Blue Streaks powered through today's match, displaying the grit and determination needed to capture a victory less than 24 hours after winning their match against Earlham.

Starting off in the 14th minute, Macey Malinky fired the first shot of the game, but it was deflected off the Grizzlies' defender. Franklin's Elaina Paige registered the Grizzlies first shot in the 22nd minute.

After a corner kick in the 23rd minute, Blue Streak junior Claire Hollern had an opportunity to convert a header in the box, which ultimately came up just short. Later on in the 31st minute, Brittany Dufalla launched a shot that Franklin goalkeeper Riley Rice was able to get a hand on to deflect the ball out of bounds.

John Carroll goalkeeper Danielle DelGiudice was tested for the first time in the 44th minute, saving a shot by Franklin's Sarah Guy.

Coming out after halftime, the Blue Streaks dominated possession early, firing off five consecutive shots to no avail. After a few possessions and shots by the Grizzlies, which were halted by Delgiudice, John Carroll went back into attack mode, again coming up just short on shots by Gabriella Walter and Brittany Dufalla

In what would be their final opportunity of the match, Franklin's Lily Haines and Kinsey Price had prime shot opportunities, with Haines' being saved by DelGiuddice and Price's going over the top of the goal.

This then led to the best opportunity of the match for John Carroll. After John Carroll won possession, JCU's Dufalla headed a contested ball to Monin, who was able to corral the pass and dribble up field before launching a shot from the top right of the box into the left upper corner of the net, just over the outstretched hands of Franklin's Rice. Monin's goal was her first since her freshman year back in 2019, and it could not have come at a better time for the Blue Streaks.

For the Blue Streaks, DelGiudice finished with 3 saves on 3 shots on goal, while Franklin's Rice finished with 9 saves on 10 shots on goal.

John Carroll will be back in action Wednesday, September 8 for their home opener in University Heights, Ohio, as they take on Hiram College.
