Wilmington Shoots the Lights Out to Defeat Men's Basketball

WILMINGTON, Ohio -- On the final Saturday before the start of the Spring academic semester, the John Carroll Men's Basketball team traveled south to take on the Fightin' Quakers of Wilmington.

The contest was a tough one, and the Blue Streaks struggled to contain the aggressiveness of Wilmington.

John Carroll fought valiantly, but suffered a 94-73 loss. Led by youngsters David Gentry and Connor O'Toole, the Blue & Gold fought hard to compete tonight.

The first half was a tough 20 minutes for the Blue Streaks. The beginning of the game went back and forth, seeing David Gentry and Hugh Brown doing the bulk of the scoring, keeping the game close through the first seven minutes, leading 14-12 at the 13-minute mark.

However, the next 13 minutes were all Quakers, with Wilmington moving the ball well, shooting well, and playing aggressively. The Quakers had two players reach double figures in the first half, as Jeffrey Mansfield and Anthony Freeman combined for 29 of the Quakers' 54 first-half points. The Blue & Gold did not shoot well in the first half, going 13-of-33 from the field and 1-of-9 from behind the arc, compared to the Quakers shooting 20-of-39 from the field and 8-of-19 from deep. The Blue Streaks shot 11-of-13 from the line in the first half and out-rebounded the Quakers, but the Blue & Gold went into the half down 16 and with a tough road ahead to mount a comeback.

Unfortunately, the second half wasn't much different for the visiting Blue Streaks. Anthony Freeman picked up right where he left off in the first, sinking two 3-pointers to quickly move the Quakers up 20 at 60-40. Wilmington kept up the intensity from the get-go and hounded the Blue Streaks the whole way through. Jeffrey Mansfield was also effective at poking holes in the Blue Streaks defense once again. Foul trouble riddled the Blue Streaks, as three of their five starters acquired 3 or more fouls.

David Gentry was the star for the Blue Streaks, continuing to be aggressive around the rim and giving his all. JCU struggled to get quality looks throughout the second and couldn't keep up with the fire that the Quakers had going, and stumbled to a 94-73 loss in the final game before the start of the spring semester.

Gentry was one of two Blue Streaks who got to double figures, scoring 25 points. Jackson Sartain was the other, tallying 10. Connor O'Toole had 9, Hugh Brown had 6, and PJ Flannery and Blake Booker had 5 apiece. The Blue Streaks struggled to get much of anything going throughout the evening, shooting 41.5% from the field and only making 3 shots from deep, severely hampering what is a high-flying Blue Streak offense. The Blue & Gold managed to outscore the Quakers on the break and in the paint, but valiant efforts in both areas were just not enough.

On the other side, the Fightin' Quakers had 5 players in double figures, getting contributions from everywhere. Wilmington shot 50% from both inside and outside the three point line, shared the ball well, and were aggressive on the glass.

John Carroll Men's Basketball will look to get their second OAC victory on the road this Wednesday against Baldwin Wallace.
