Women's Basketball Completes Road Stretch by Conquering the Quakers

WILMINGTON, Ohio -- Olivia Nagy is on a tear.

John Carroll Women's Basketball didn't burst out of the gates on the road on Saturday, but the Blue Streaks sure did finish strong. Nagy made sure of that.

The reigning Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Week notched 19 points and 10 rebounds in the second half alone, helping John Carroll leap to a 76-56 road win at Wilmington.

The Fightin' Quakers kept it close in the first half, as JCU held a 38-33 lead after the first half. But then Nagy took over the game.

The senior scored the first points of the third quarter, and John Carroll's first six points. Her 6-0 run to start the second half pushed JCU ahead, 44-33, and the visitors never looked back. The Fightin' Quakers didn't get on the board until the 5:55 mark.

The Blue Streaks didn't stop the train in the later stages of the third. After Nagy hit a layup in the paint with 2:57 left in the third, John Carroll's lead never dropped below double digits. Kaelyn Underwood connected on a jumper with 5 seconds left in the third to ensure a 53-39 lead entering the fourth.

Abby Adler drained a triple early in the fourth, setting the tone for the final stanza. A Nagy fastbreak with 3:45 remaining lifted the lead to 21 points, and a Gabrielle Gevaudan 3-pointer provided a nail in the coffin.

The teams played stellar defense in the early goings. John Carroll constructed a 12-7 lead by the 3:42 mark of the first quarter, thanks to 3-pointers by Sarah Balfour and Nicole Heffington. Wilmington managed to erase the deficit, but the Blue Streaks still led after one, 16-14, thanks to strong play in the paint late.

Wilmington played it close in the second and even took a modest lead at 21-20 a couple minutes in, building to 24-20 with a triple a couple minutes later. But then the Blue Streaks got hot, with Heffington and Hannah Bouchy hitting 3-pointers to get back on top.

Balfour and Bouchy kept up the gas down the stretch, and Abby Adler hit a late jumper to ensure the visitors would head into the locker room with the lead. John Carroll stood on top, 38-33, at the intermission, and never again trailed.

Nagy's 23 points and 14 rebounds led the way for John Carroll, and represented her ninth double-double of the 2021-22 campaign. She also added 3 blocks. Heffington reached double figures with 14 points, as did Balfour with 11 points. Balfour almost reached a double-double, tallying a season-high 9 assists.

Now 11-2 overall and 6-1 in OAC play, the Blue Streaks will host Baldwin Wallace for a marquee matchup on Wednesday evening at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.
