Ethan Domitrovich (#5) was one of four Blue Streaks to break a school record on Saturday.
WESTERVILLE, Ohio & ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- 2022 started off just how 2021 ended for Cross Country National Champion Alex Phillip and John Carroll.

Alex Phillip, Garrett Clark, and Ian Pierson traveled to Ann Arbor to compete with some of the best runners throughout the NCAA, and they did not disappoint.

Alex Phillip came in second in the Mile and broke a school record with a time of 4:05.50. Garrett Clark broke the school record in the 400m while placing fourth, and Ian Pierson finished a solid 12. JCU's three star student-athletes showed the NCAA they can compete at any level.

Meanwhile, John Carroll sent most of its team to Westerville, Ohio to compete at the Otterbein Invitational. One of the stars was Zach Szafarski, who had one of his best days in his career. He won the Shot Put and finished second in the Weight Throw. Matthew Russo joined him on the podium placing second in the Shot Put, and had a solid 8th place in the Weight Throw.

Jimmy Kartsonas had an excellent day, placing 3rd in the 60m Dash, and won the Triple Jump. Corey Minton placed second in the Triple Jump, and Willis Goodwin placed third with a PR in the Long Jump, rounding out an impressive day in the field events for the Blue Streaks.

Zach Gerber had a solid day, placing second in the 60m hurdles, and the rest of the team really flourished in the distance and mid-distance categories. In the 500m, Evan Piscitani won, Mick Doyle finished 2nd, and Mike Hvizdos placed fifth. The 1000m was dominated by all five JCU runners to compete in it: Ethan Domitrovich (1st), Gabe Ernest (2nd), Cormac Peppard-Kramer (4th), Pat White (5th), and Tommy Naiman (6th).

Ethan Domitrovich's time of 2:30.21 was also good enough to earn the sophomore a school record in the 1000m, in exceptional fashion. Jamie Dailey placed second in the 3000m, but his time of 8:21.42 was enough for the fourth school record of the day for the program. The fifth-year senior continued his momentum from an All-American cross country season.

Finally, Mick Doyle, Cam Klauke, Zach Walsh, and Victor Ononogbo took home a 4x400m Relay victory to cap off the day at Otterbein.

Additionally on Friday in Youngstown, Jared Arnold broke 4:20 in the mile for the first time, running 4:19.51 to finish third in his heat and fifth overall at the YSU Collegiate Invite.

Against five other OAC schools and many others, John Carroll's men's team had a stellar day all around, and will look to keep that momentum running next weekend at Baldwin Wallace on Saturday January 29.
