Volleyball Sweeps the Comets in OAC Road Affair

BEXLEY, Ohio – The October grind is never easy, but especially so when you have two trips to Columbus in the span of four days.

With how close the Ohio Athletic Conference standings are, you can't afford any offdays. The Blue Streaks didn't take one today.

John Carroll Volleyball earned a 26-24, 25-15, 25-13 victory over Capital on Saturday afternoon on the road.

After a morning bus trip down I-71, the Blue Streaks struggled to fire out to a hot start in Bexley. Capital fired out to a 14-11 start. But then the Blue Streaks came alive, winning four straight points thanks in part to a pair of Maddie Maziarz aces. The teams traded points before JCU fired forward 23-19.

Capital looked to get back into the conversation and did with a 4-0 run to knot the set at 24-24. But the Blue Streaks showed a killer instinct in winning the final two points, with Jessica Liddle delivering the final blow with a service ace.

The Blue Streaks fired up a strong opening salvo in the second set, bursting out to a 9-5 lead. A 5-0 JCU run made possible by Abigail Kirk & Kenda Dziubinski blocks upped the score to 14-6. The Comets did push back with a four-point jaunt, and then slimmed the lead to 19-14.

But the Blue Streaks again showed a killer instinct, as two Steph Conley kills and three Capital attack errors pushed the hosts to the brink, 24-14. A Jenn Follmer provided the final kill for a 25-15 win in set two.

A strong start in set three set the tone for JCU, as a 9-4 start was made possible in part by Jessica Liddle and Marissa Lynch kills. John Carroll kept up the momentum down the stretch, showing no mercy. A pair of late Follmer kills ensured that the Blue Streaks walked away with a 25-13 conquest.

Cassi Calamunci tallied a team-best 12 kills, with Conley following closely with 10, each tabbing a .435 attack percentage. Ally Bartolone topped the team with 20 assists and added 10 digs. Lexi MacDonald registered a team-best 23 digs. JCU finished with a .290 attack percentage.

With the victory, the Blue Streaks advance to 17-7 on the season, 4-3 in OAC play. The Blue & Gold are in a logjam in the standings, tied with Muskingum for fifth. JCU has yet to play the Fighting Muskies, as that matchup will come next Saturday.

John Carroll has now beaten Capital 12 straight times, not losing a set to the Comets since 2014.

The Blue Streaks return home after the road trip with a Wednesday night home match vs. Mount Union.
