Men's Soccer Cruises Past Student Princes in Tiffin

TIFFIN, Ohio – Tonight, John Carroll Men's Soccer continued its success in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) with an away victory against Heidelberg University.

With a much-needed dominant statement performance, the Wenzler's Warriors look to continue their momentum and work with their OAC undefeated streak, stemming all the way from 2017.

John Carroll advances to 7-3-1 on the year with the 3-0 victory.

The Blue Streaks came out in their typical formation with similar mindsets compared to usual, ready to work with the disadvantage of a grass pitch with spirits continually held high.

Through the first twenty minutes of the contest, the Blue Streaks had a lot of good chances in front of the Student Princes' goal, most notably a shot off the bar from Patrick Koenig, as well as a header from an over the top through ball with Steven Samuelson.

About five minutes later, the Blue Streaks pulled ahead after constant attacking presence. On the left hand a few yards outside of the 18-yard box, Jack Foht would draw a foul, allowing a huge free kick opportunity for the Blue Streaks to pull ahead. Logan Penton would walk up with confidence with an ambitious eye for goal. Penton stepped up and struck the ball beautifully, as it found its way into the back of the net, top center left for the Blue Streaks to pull ahead after coming so close before.

JCU continued applying pressure for the remainder of the half, with a few more solid chances without a finish, as the half drew to a close and the Blue Streaks found themselves with a convincing 1-0 lead going into the break.

John Carroll came out guns blazing in the second half, with a handful of shots just in the opening minutes, unfortunately none of which put a real test to Heidelberg's keeper, but surely tiring out the Student Princes' defenders.

Similar to the first twenty minutes of play in the first half, the Blue Streaks forced a bend of Heidelberg, but not a break.

In the 65th minute of play, John Carroll snuck in another goal. The Blue Streaks began a quality methodical buildup as they worked out of their midfield third. The ball was played right of center of the pitch to the tireless Nicholas Graeca. The veteran sent a through ball over the top to Ben Brucken, who played a one touch chip over the keeper from a formidable distance as it rolled into the back of the net. John Carroll stretched the lead to 2-0.

Just ten minutes later, the Blue Streaks struck for a third time with a special senior connection. After drawing a corner kick with a stellar attack, Brenden Swann would play it into the area. Senior captain Nicholas Ruggiero would get a head on it at the front post and redirect it into the back corner of the far side, an incredible linkup from the seasoned veterans to finish the job.

The whistle blew, with John Carroll taking the win in a remarkable fashion, 3-0 final.

The Blue Streaks showed brilliant attacking ambition all match, firing off a surprising 33 shots, with 15 of those being on target, while Heidelberg was with 2 total shots all game without one on target. Jake Vogrin would take his fifth shutout of the season, and his third consecutive.

John Carroll will be in action this Saturday as they will travel to take on Marietta College, the two 2-0-0 teams in the conference at this moment in time.
