Volleyball's 10-Match Winning Streak Concludes in Tiffin

TIFFIN, Ohio – Any given night in the Ohio Athletic Conference, anything can happen.

John Carroll Volleyball entered as one of the hottest teams in the conference, red-hot with a 10-match winning streak, the program's longest since the 1990's.

But missing a starter and playing a tough Heidelberg team, the Blue Streaks fell in a five-set thriller: 25-16, 22-25, 25-21, 19-25, 20-22.

The Blue Streaks started out fast in the opening set despite missing starter Jessica Liddle in the middle. The visitors jumped out to a significant lead and never looked back.

John Carroll's strong play won the set, pushing ahead to the early lead with a 25-16 opening win.

The story of the second set was the inverse of the first. Heidelberg fired out to a nice lead, including a 19-14 advantage. The Student Princes and Blue Streaks split the next 10 points, so the Berg sat ahead, 24-19.

The Blue Streaks responded with three straight points, staving off the end of the set. Heidelberg elected to take a timeout at 24-22. The respite work, as the Student Princes won the set, 25-22, to tie up the match.

John Carroll responded well, moving ahead 17-12 in the third set. But then, the Student Princes awoke from their slumber, scoring five straight points. The teams then traded jabs, as the score stood tied at 21.

But the Blue Streaks did not allow a comeback in the waning moments of the set, ripping four consecutive points to secure a 25-21 victory.

The Student Princes flipped the momentum in the fourth set. The hosts burst out to a 17-6 advantage. John Carroll attempted a comeback, but couldn't gain too much traction. Down 22-13, Michele Benoit called a timeout to regroup.

The break allowed the Blue Streaks to make a modest run, but the Student Princes managed to hold on for a still significant 25-19 conquest. The hosts' win forced a tiebreaking fifth set.

Heidelberg seized the moment early in the set, carrying a 7-3 lead midway through the set. But then the Blue Streaks roared back into it. A mere 15 points would not be enough to decide this rubber match.

The teams traded points, as neither squad could put together a run. The score stood tied at 18, then 19, then 20. But then the Student Princes netted a couple nifty kills to secure the home upset over the Blue Streaks.

Cassi Calamunci stepped to the fore again to lead the team in kills with 15. The reigning OAC Offensive Player of the Week added 18 digs. Jennifer Follmer was one kill away from a season high with 13 on the evening. Deja Whitten played all five sets in the middle tonight, tallying five kills plus a block.

Ally Bartolone tallied 23 assists to lead the team, though Maddie Maziarz trailed closely with 22. Lexi MacDonald topped the team with 19 digs, while Bartolone and Payton Miozzi each tabbed 14.

Looking at the team stats, each team registered 56 kills, but Heidelberg enjoyed a significant advantage in blocks, 16-4, which hindered JCU. The Blue Streaks did have a better hitting percentage, though, .114 to .090.

The Blue Streaks will look to bounce back on Friday, heading to Case Western Reserve University for a non-conference matchup.
