Men's Basketball Showcases New Look in Dominant Win over Wittenberg

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The John Carroll Men's Basketball Team (1-0) lit up the scoreboard in a 94-72 win over the Wittenberg Tigers (0-1).

The John Carroll victory rounded out day one of The Kauling Companies Tip-Off Classic.

The Blue Streaks showcased a new look team and even a fresh looking gold uniform kit. The game provided a sneak peek into perhaps what may be a sensational season for the Blue & Gold.

The first points of the season were scored by sophomore transfer from Youngstown State University, Luke Chicone, on an inside jumper. The Mentor graduate's first bucket gave the Blue Streaks a 2-0 lead.

By the time John Carroll Head Coach Pete Moran subbed out his entire starting lineup, the starters had established a five point lead. The Moran family is known well for the non-traditional platoon swaps.

A fast-paced attack and a team-leading 11 points from The Citadel graduate transfer, Jerry Higgins III, had the Blue Streaks ahead of Wittenberg 43-34 at the half.

JCU came out of the gates red hot, they opened the half on an 8-0 run and never looked back. The Blue Streaks would extend the lead as high as 28 at one point down the stretch. John Carroll eventually closed out the game with a 22-point victory.

Higgins III finished as the highest scorer with 17 points on an impressive 6-8 from the field. Luke Frazier (10), Luke Chicone (13), and Chase Toppin (10) all completed the night in double digits.

Will Yontek, a sophomore transfer from Marietta, and Henry Raynor, a Hillsdale College transfer, each attacked the boards. Yontek grabbed eight while Raynor ripped down seven.

Wittenberg's scorers were led by freshman Jerry Saunders Jr. He wrapped up the night with 26 points. The guard was far and away the highest scorer on the team.

John Carroll will wrap up the Kaulig Companies Tip-Off Classic tomorrow, November 12, at 3 pm. The Blue Streaks will be taking on the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan.
