Women's Basketball Closes Tip-Off Tournament with a Win Over Hiram

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- The John Carroll Women's Basketball team wanted to end the Winking Lizard Tip-Off Tournament on a high note.

In the last game of the day versus the Hiram Terriers, they did just that, winning 79-63.

The Blue Streaks notched their second win in as many days with the victory in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

The team started the game with infectious energy. Maddie Pietrowski got the Blue Streaks on the board first with a beautiful three-pointer.

The John Carroll offense did not ease up in the first quarter, outscoring Hiram 24-14 in the opening frame.

Kaelyn Underwood was a significant part of this offensive push, putting up seven points of her own in the quarter. Pietrowski totaled seven points in the quarter as well.

Hiram started to play more aggressively at the end of the quarter, but the Blue Streaks were still able to maintain the strong lead.

The Terriers began to challenge the Blue Streaks more at the beginning of the second quarter, chipping away at the John Carroll lead.

The Blue and Gold met the challenge, continuing to score. They started to slow down some, though, as they accumulated eight personal fouls in the quarter. The Blue Streaks also had six turnovers, while Hiram had only three in the quarter.

Going into halftime, John Carroll still had a small lead, up 41-36.

Pietrowski got the Blue Streaks on the board again in the third quarter. Both teams continued to play aggressively, but John Carroll was able to find rebounds and make plays.

A three-pointer by Ava Ryncarz followed by a layup by Pietrowski gave the Blue Streaks, and their fans, a boost partway through the third quarter.

The Blue Streaks continued this momentum, playing a tough defense despite personal fouls.

Multiple rebounds by the Blue and Gold provided key scoring opportunities for John Carroll late in the third quarter.

Despite the Blue Streaks' resilience in the third quarter, the Terriers continued to keep the score close, making it 59-51 at the end of the third quarter.

Underwood found herself open twice early in the fourth quarter to continue to give John Carroll some breathing room. Fellow captain Jaylen Hoffmann helped advance the lead with a three-pointer off of a rebound by Halle Landies to make the score 66-53.

John Carroll continued to play strong in the fourth quarter, pulling out past Hiram.

Layups by Giselle Johnson gave the Blue Streaks a 16-point lead, their largest of the day late in the fourth quarter, making the score 76-60.

The Blue Streaks were not going to let that lead be enough, though. A layup by Angela Vitantonio with 1:49 left in the game extended their lead.

Missed shots by the Terriers and continued strong defense by John Carroll wrapped up the win for the Blue and Gold, winning by a comfortable score of 79-63.

Underwood led the team in points with 15 and earned Tournament MVP honors. Pietrowski got a spot on the All-Tournament team, pouring in 13 points. Olivia Giunta followed with 12 points. Hoffmann and Pietrowski tied for most assists for the team with six. Defensively, Underwood led the team with two blocks.

The team will travel to Albion, MI to play Albion College next Saturday at 4 pm.
