Volleyball's OAC Championship Hopes Fade Against Otterbein

WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- The John Carroll volleyball team's incredible season came to an end in the Ohio Athletic Conference Championship match against the #1 seed Otterbein, where they lost 3-0 (16-25, 21-25, 22-25) at the Rike Center.

The match was the #2 seed JCU's first appearance in a conference championship match since 2014, and only their third 20+ win season since 2000.  They were also picked to finish in eighth place in the OAC Preseason Poll prior to the start of the season.

The Blue Streaks held a steady lead to open the first set before the Cardinals tied it at 9-9.  Otterbein took over from there, scoring seven of the next eight points and never trailed the rest of the set as they won 25-16 while the closest the Blue Streaks got during that stretch was within five.

The match was tied five times in the opening stanza of the second, until the Cardinals went on a 5-2 run to take a 14-11 advantage.  JCU rallied, as they scored five of the next seven to knot it at 16-16.  Shortly after a 6-2 run from the Cardinals, JCU came within two at 23-21 but Otterbein shut the door scoring the final two points on kills to win 25-21.

Otterbein continued their momentum into the third, taking a 15-11 lead.  However, the Blue Streaks fought back by scoring six of the next eight to knot it at 17-17.

JCU tied it three more times, and even took a 22-21 lead by scoring three in a row after being down 21-19.  The Cardinals then capped off the match with the last four points, three of which were on kills, to win the set 25-22 and clinch their second OAC Championship in the last three seasons.

Jennifer Follmer and Jessica Liddle each had 10 kills for the Blue Streaks, while OAC Player of the Year Cassi Calamunci was held to just five kills and five digs.

Lexi MacDonald had a match-high 21 digs and was named to the OAC All-Tournament Team along with Follmer.

Three players registered double digit kills for Otterbein, with Morgan Hartman leading the way with 19.  Amber Greeley, who was named Tournament Most Outstanding Player, had 16 while Kennedy Hoffman added 14.  Carlie Craycraft also had 44 assists and broke Otterbein's career record in the category.  All players except Hoffman made the All-Tournament Team as well.

The NCAA Tournament Selection Show will air at 1 p.m. on Monday, November 7 on ncaa.com.
