Women's Basketball Stumbles at Marietta on Friday Evening

MARIETTA, Ohio – The road continues to be unkind to a young John Carroll Women's Basketball squad.

The Blue Streaks dropped an 81-60 loss to the Marietta College Pioneers on Friday evening in Ban Johnson Arena.

With the defeat, John Carroll drops to 5-3 overall, and 1-3 on the road.

Jaylen Hoffmann opened the scoring with a jumper at 8:05 of the first quarter, but a 6-0 Marietta run that followed set the stage for the evening, as the Pioneers never again trailed. The lead did not stretch too far in the opening stanza, but a Marietta layup with two seconds left set the score at 19-13 Pioneers entering the second.

Marietta fired out of the gates in the second quarter, leading to a full timeout by JCU at 7:05, trailing 25-15. The Blue Streaks found success from beyond the arc, with Halle Landies and Carmen Heuker hitting nice triples. But each time, the Pios counterpunched. So, the visitors headed into the break with a hill to climb, trailing 39-30.

The Pioneers scored the first points of the third quarter and never looked back, as the advantage never dwindled below 10 points. Marietta stood ahead after three quarters, 58-45, and finished things off in the fourth quarter.

Landies topped the scorers for JCU with 13 points. Ava Ryncarz (12), Kaelyn Underwood (11), and Carmen Heuker (10) all tabbed double-digit point totals for JCU. Olivia Giunta topped the team with 8 rebounds.

While the Blue Streaks looked good shooting from deep (8-for-20), the Blue & Gold were outscored in the paint, 42-24. Marietta won the rebound battle, 48-40, shooting 45.6% compared to JCU's 33.3%.

The Blue Streaks will look to bounce back against #3 / 5 Transylvania on Saturday at 4 pm in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.
