Women's Basketball Gets Back on Track with Dominant Home Win over ONU

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Following a heartbreaking loss to Otterbein University on Wednesday, John Carroll Women's Basketball looked to rebound against the top-rated defensive team in the Ohio Athletic Conference in the Ohio Northern Polar Bears.

The last time these two teams played at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center was last year during the OAC Tournament Semifinal, in which John Carroll came away the victors of a defensive masterpiece game.

Similar to the last matchup, the Blue Streaks held the Polar Bears to a 25.7 shooting percentage on the day, as the hosts came away with a 68-43 victory on Saturday, February 12.

It was a defensive battle right from the opening tip, as the first points weren't scored until just over seven minutes into the first quarter.

After the Polar Bears earned the first score, John Carroll responded with an offensive explosion.

Sarah Balfour led the way with seven points as John Carroll jumped out to a 15-4 lead late in the first quarter. After a few traded baskets, John Carroll closed the quarter with an 18-8 advantage.

The start of the second quarter continued in a similar fashion as both teams continued to trade baskets. The trend broke with a Nicole Heffington three-pointer, prompting a 12-4 Blue Streak run. The Blue Streaks took their biggest lead of the game at 36-19 with 2:42 left in the first half.

Following an Ohio Northern timeout, the Polar Bears hit back-to-back threes to close the gap to just 12 points to end the first half. John Carroll shot an efficient 42.4% from the field while they held Ohio Northern to just 24.4% from inside the arc.

John Carroll played a near perfect third quarter defensively, as the home team held Ohio Northern to just three points. The JCU offense continued to be efficient, as the Blue Streaks scored 13 points to push the pace.

The Blue Streaks went into cruise control to start the fourth quarter, as they opened up with back-to-back threes to put the game out of reach.

The three-ball continued to fall for the Blue Streaks, as Hannah Bouchy hit three shots from behind the arc in consecutive possessions.

"In the first quarter they were sagging off me a lot, so as an athlete I can't let that go. I'll shoot, I'll score and that was my mentality going into the second half," Bouchy said.

As the buzzer sounded in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center, the Blue and Gold were the victors of a well-fought battle.

Olivia Nagy starred in the show, compiling 17 points, 16 rebounds, and eight blocks. Bouchy finished with 11 points and two rebounds. Nicole Heffington (12) and Sarah Balfour (10) also tallied double-digit point totals.

"We were a little shaky at first, took a while to get comfortable with what they were allowing but once we had some outside shots fall and Olivia rebounding really loosened up," Head Coach Beth Andrews '15 said. "We kept saying push the pace push the pace and we were able to find our rhythm in the second and third quarter."

The Blue Streaks will travel to Berea, Ohio on Wednesday, February 16 as they have the much-anticipated rematch against their rivals the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
