Banged-Up Blue Streaks Fall to BW in OAC Tournament Championship at Home

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Before the start of today's Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Championship, Nicole Heffington was honored as the all-time point leader in John Carroll Women's Basketball history, while wearing a boot for an injury. She would be sidelined for the game.

In terms of making history, Olivia Nagy also had some of her own. The star center set the record for career rebounds at John Carroll, passing Missy Spahar, who had 912 boards during her time at John Carroll.

Unfortunately, the records did not translate to a title, as the short-handed Blue Streaks lost at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center to Baldwin Wallace, 60-50.

Nagy's record was the bright spot in a tough defeat for the Blue Streaks, who have been wracked by injuries this week.

"It means a lot to me," said Olivia Nagy. "Scoring points is great, but being able to get those rebounds shows how important defense is a part of the game."

Nagy now holds the record for blocks and rebounds at John Carroll.

"She brought many things to the table, including blocks, rebounds, and points," said Head Coach Beth Andrews '15. "I am proud of everything she has accomplished for me and this school."

The arena and tempo was electric as soon as Olivia Nagy won the tip-off for the Blue Streaks. Both teams fought back and forth, eager to grow a lead, but neither team could find the stride they wanted for the opening five minutes.

Both teams played aggressively in the first quarter. Almost every play was in the paint, and the lanes were closing faster and faster every play. At the end of the first quarter, the score was a tied at 10. Lily Edwards notched 8 of BW's 10 points, while Olivia Nagy had 6 of her team's 10 points. Shooting behind the arc did not work for both teams as they went a combined 0-8 from downtown.

In the second quarter, Olivia Nagy got her fourth board, setting the career record for total rebounds.

Both teams started to get comfortable with the basketball and the game turned from a defensive game to an offensive game. Izzy Andrews hit two threes behind the arc and Nagy continued to push the paint. As the offense piled on, the score was 22-22 in a stalemate once again heading into the break.

The second half went underway, and offense picked up where it left off in the second quarter. Gabrielle Gevaudan hit a triple and Emily Irvin hit a nice layup.

Halfway into the third quarter, the Yellow Jackets gained a lead of five points, and they found a spark to expand their lead to eight at the end of the third quarter, thanks to a buzzer beater three by Lily Edwards, setting the score at 40-32.

Although down by eight, the Blue Streaks were not ready to give up. After making a move on her defender, Hannah Bouchy completed the and-one opportunity to bring the game back to three. In response, Baldwin Wallace hit a deep three of their own, courtesy of Emily Irwin.

The Yellow Jackets got in a zone and expanded their lead to double digits thanks to the putback layup by Kira Philpot.

Despite the strong efforts of John Carroll for a late push while fighting through injury, they could not hold on and fell with a final score of 60-50 in favor of Baldwin Wallace.

Nagy finished with a double-double with 20 points and 11 boards shooting 9-for-16. Nagy earned a spot on the OAC All-Tournament team. For Baldwin Wallace, Lily Edwards finished with 27 points and 10 boards, collecting a double-double as well.

John Carroll hopes to keep their season alive by acquiring a bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament on Monday, February 28 at 2:30 pm.
