Women's Lacrosse Edged by Ladies in Defensive Battle in Season Opener

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- After a historic 2021 season, the John Carroll University Women's Lacrosse team fell short of a victory in a season-opening 9-8 loss against Kenyon College.

Despite a slow offensive start, three consecutive goals by JCU led to a 6-6 tie in the fourth period, but unfortunately, the Blue Streaks could not take hold of the game.

Kenyon's victory came courtesy of Caroline O'Neil's star performance. O'Neil found the back of the net for the Ladies less than a minute into the game, giving the visitors a quick 1-0 advantage. O'Neil's success continued as she struck again at the 5:14 and 3:03 mark of the first quarter, giving her an early hat trick.

John Carroll's offense struggled in the opening quarter as they were outshot, but with 1:13 left in the first period, Carly Ross scored off a free position for the Blue and Gold, cutting Kenyon's lead to 3-1.

The second period of the game remained a silent offensive chess match between John Carroll and Kenyon. The period's first goal was scored with 4:30 left via Alex Heishman scoring a free-position attempt.

In the last minutes of the second period, Maddie Munding recorded her second save of the game off a free position attempt from Kenyon. With less than 1:24 seconds before halftime, Kenyon struck again, taking a 4-2 lead going into the locker room.

Out of the gates in the second half, Kenyon continued with their success as Maddie Garner scored for the Ladies just a little over a minute into the third period.

Just seconds later, John Carroll responded with a goal from Shannon Burdick

Both teams continued to exchange goals throughout the third period as Kenyon scored a sixth goal, but Olivia Gerlach cut the Ladies' lead to 6-4 off of an assist from Ross.

At the 1:47 mark of the third quarter, John Carroll tightened Kenyon's lead to one courtesy of a goal from Olivia Hanaluak.

John Carroll's offensive dominance continued as they scored their third consecutive goal. Heishman scored the game-tying goal at the 13:53 mark of the fourth and final period resulting in a 6-6 tie game.

Kenyon took advantage once again, taking a 7-6 lead, but their lead didn't last for long with Burdick scoring off of an assist from Hanaluak. Unfortunately for John Carroll, Kenyon continued to lock up their victory, as O'Neil scored her fourth and fifth goal of the day, putting the Ladys ahead 9-7 with 5:29 left.

Jenna Ginsberg made a last minute effort for John Carroll, scoring them the hosts' eighth goal of the game, but Kenyon finished with a 9-8 advantage.

John Carroll finished the game with 20 ground balls and 18 caused turnovers. Burdick and Heishman led the offense with two goals each.

Munding recorded seven saves on the afternoon in the net.

Today's season opener marks just the second game in program history that both John Carroll and its opponent have scored under double-digits. In other words, the JCU defense played quite well today in the defensive affair, anchored by Munding in net with her 7 ground balls and 7 saves.

The Blue Streaks will remain at home for their second game of the season as they take on Allegheny College on Wednesday, March 2. The contest is set to begin at 7 p.m. at Don Shula Stadium.
