Baseball Opens 2022 Campaign with Pair of Losses to Wittenberg

XENIA, Ohio -- John Carroll Baseball began their spring 2022 season on Sunday with a doubleheader against a non-conference opponent, the Wittenberg Tigers.

The two teams squared off for the first time since 2007, and the Tigers swept the Blue Streaks 7-6 and 7-3 despite strong performances by Henry Haracz and Mitchell Midea, two players who earned All-OAC second team honors a season ago.

Game One
Sunday's first contest started off with a three-up, three-down inning for John Carroll. Wittenberg capitalized on the ho-hum start with a leadoff solo home run by fifth-year player Gabe Stacy in the bottom of the first. After giving up the solo home run, Mitchell Midea began to heat up on the mound for the Blue Streaks. In 3.1 innings pitched, Midea finished with an incredible seven strikeouts to continue his dominance from last season.

John Carroll's offense rallied behind Midea's sharp pitching with an offensive surge. After back-to-back outs to begin the second inning, Victor Glaser tripled, bringing up Erik Daugenti, who brought home Glaser with an RBI single to tie the game at one apiece.

In the top of the fourth, sophomore Joe Olsavsky belted a solo-home run to give the Blue Streaks their first lead of the game. The following inning, Glaser struck once again, this time with a solo shot of his own. Haracz topped off the scoring with an RBI triple, bringing home Luke Galioto, and gave John Carroll a 4-1 advantage.

In the bottom half of the frame, Wittenberg climbed back into the game with a scoring run of their own. Stacy and Chase Whisner got on base with a pair of singles before Jack Siefert brought Stacy home with an RBI single. Another RBI single by Matt Moore brought Whisner in, and Wittenberg was able to tie the game up at 4-4 courtesy of a wild pitch, which allowed Siefert to scamper in for the score.

The Blue Streaks gained the lead right back at the top of the sixth with an RBI single by Matt Cassaro, allowing Justin Hanley to score. Haracz gave the Blue Streaks a little bit of breathing room after stealing two bases before eventually making it home via a wild pitch, giving the Blue Streaks a 6-4 lead.

Following a WIttenberg run to end the eighth, John Carroll was unable to add any insurance runs and headed into the bottom of the ninth with a 6-5 lead.

After two quick outs to start the ninth inning, the Blue Streaks were on the brink of securing a victory. Wittenberg's Mason Davis, Jared Burick and Ben Seibert kept the game going by each drawing a walk. Following a Blue Streak pitching change, Stacy walked it off with an RBI double down the left field line, allowing Burick and Maxwell Monachino (pinch-running for Davis) to score, resulting in a 7-6 Wittenberg win.

Jon Gavric accepted the loss for the Blue Streaks as he allowed four walks and two earned runs in his 1.2 innings pitched. Justin Maynard earned the victory for Wittenberg with a solid three innings of relief work in which he only allowed one run on two hits while striking out four.

Game Two
John Carroll could not recover from their walk-off loss in game one against Wittenberg.

The Blue Streak offense didn't have success for the majority of game two of the doubleheader, as they were unable to garner any scoring chances to begin the game. The first three offensive innings for the Blue Streaks came and went without a run as none of the batters were able to register a hit at the plate.

As for Wittenberg, they had no trouble getting on base in the first two innings; however, they were unable to capitalize on any scoring chances. In the bottom of the first inning, Stacy, the hero in the first game, tripled to right field, but his teammates were unable to bring him home. In the bottom of the second, Caleb Fogarty landed on third base courtesy of a double by Parker Gryskevic, but yet again Wittenberg was unable to score.

Wittenberg was finally able to capitalize on their scoring chances with several runs in the third inning, getting to JCU starting pitcher Andrew Steele. An RBI double by Stacy brought home Luke Thomas for the game's first run. Another RBI double, this time by Connor O'Malley, brought Stacy and Whisner in for the score to put Wittenberg up 3-0. The scoring ambush was capped off by an RBI single by Austin Morrow, allowing Siefert to score to put Wittenberg up 4-0 to close out the third inning.

With Jon Ambro in to pitch the bottom of the fourth, Davis singled in Whisner for another Wittenberg run. In the bottom of the sixth, Wittenberg added another run as O'Malley singled in Whisner to bring the score to 6-0.

The Blue Streaks headed into the top of the eighth without a run, when they finally cracked through with a two-out, RBI double by Haracz. This run was essentially canceled as Morrow singled home O'Malley, making the score 6-1 Wittenburg in the bottom half of the inning.

Heading into the ninth trailing by five runs and hoping to make their own ninth-inning comeback, John Carroll needed a heroic effort to get themselves their first win of the season. After both Danny Murphy and Olsavsky singled to begin the inning, Galioto ripped a single down the right-field line to score Murphy. The momentum was quickly erased however, as Cassaro grounded into a double-play. After a wild pitch that allowed Olsavsky to score, Daugenti grounded out to end the game with a final score of 7-3 in Wittenberg's favor.

Wittenberg's starting pitcher, Austin Luther, finished his day with eight strikeouts and zero runs allowed in six innings pitched, earning the win. On the other side, Steele finished with four earned runs, four walks, five hits, and four strikeouts in his 2.1 innings of work.

John Carroll will now prepare for the team's annual trip to Florida next week.
