Offensive Fireworks and Stellar Pitching Highlight Blue Streaks' Split With Trine in Florida Opener

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The John Carroll baseball team opened their annual Florida trip at Lake Myrtle Park Field #5 in Auburndale by splitting with Trine in two seven inning games.  The Blue Streaks lost the first game 1-0 in eight innings but stormed back in the second and won 15-0.

Game 1 was a pitcher's battle as Trine's Josh Hoogewerf sent down the first nine JCU hitters he faced.  Despite two John Carroll batters reaching on errors in the fourth, Hoogewerf struck out the next two batters to snuff out the Blue Streak threat.

For the rest of the game, Thunder pitching only allowed two base runners as JCU was not able to gain any offensive momentum.

On the other side, John Carroll's Mitch Midea had seven strikeouts while only allowing five base runners in his seven innings of action.

The only time Midea allowed two runners on in the same inning was in the first after giving up a single and a walk, but silenced the Thunder by forcing a double play to shortstop Joe Olsavsky.

The eighth inning proved to be the backbreaker as Silvan Wiley gave up a base hit after registering two outs to begin the frame.  Dalton Nikirk then stepped up and hit another single that was bobbled by the Blue Streak's Erik Daugenti in center field that sent Rhodes home to seal the walk-off victory.

JCU did have a chance to score in the eighth as Matthew Springer advanced to second on a wild pitch with two outs, but the batter Luke Galioto grounded out to shortstop to end the threat.

Game 2 was full of offensive fireworks and more pitching prowess as the Blue Streaks recorded their first shutout in Florida since 2016 when they defeated nationally-ranked Wartburg 11-0 in Winter Haven.

Both teams were scoreless in the first, but John Carroll opened up in the second as they scored on an error and sacrifice fly from Logan LaMere to make it 2-0.

JCU poured it on the Thunder in the third as Ben Surman led off the inning with a solo home run to right field.  From there, a pair of two RBI singles from Matt Cassaro and LaMere made it 6-0 while an RBI double from Bennett Cavaretta and a two RBI double by Henry Haracz made it 10-0 to cap off the eight run frame.

The Blue Streaks tacked on another run in the fourth as Danny Murphy sent a run home after grounding out to second base.

The final four were scored in the sixth for John Carroll on a Tyler Gast pinch hit single, a Joe Olsavsky walk, and a two RBI single from Connor Mayle.

Andrew Steele was dominant on the bump for JCU as he only allowed one hit and two walks in five innings of work.  Garrett Siegel closed out the night by retiring all six batters he faced in his two innings which included two strikeouts.

Mistakes hurt Trine as they totaled six errors in the game.

JCU will be back in action on Monday, March 7 as they take on Fitchburg State in one nine inning game.  First pitch is scheduled for 10:30am at Lake Myrtle Park Field #3 in Auburndale.
