Bats Stay Hot in Florida as Blue Streaks Win Big Over Fitchburg State

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The John Carroll baseball team continued to dominate in Florida at Lake Myrtle Park Field #3 as they defeated Fitchburg State from Massachusetts 11-1 in eight innings.

Despite two runners on for the Falcons and only one out to begin the first inning, Blue Streak starter Matthew Aukerman got out of the jam with a strikeout and a grounder to second base to end the threat.

Ben Surman led off the first with a triple and after the next batter Henry Haracz struck out, Falcons starter Connor Morehouse exited the game.  JCU got on the board right after with a Joe Olsavsky groundout to score Surman and make the score 1-0.

Two innings later, John Carroll struck again with a Matt Cassaro single to give the Blue Streaks a 2-0 advantage.

The Blue and Gold started to blow the game open in the fifth as Olsavsky scored on a wild pitch and then Jack Bennett the next batter singled to score two more to make it 5-0.

Fitchburg State got their lone run on a sacrifice fly to center field in the sixth, which made the score 5-1.

John Carroll continued to put the pedal to the medal in the sixth as three of the first four batters walked.  Cassaro came through again and cleaned the bases with a grand slam, pushing the score to 9-1.

In the seventh, JCU got another run on a Surman home run-his second in as many games.  The final run of the game was scored on an Erik Daugenti double in the eighth before the game was called due to the 10 run rule.

Auckerman was stellar on the bump for the Blue Streaks as he only allowed one base runner in five of his six innings of work.  The junior also struck out nine, including the side in the third and only walked one batter.

Owen Gerba and Maxwell Schumaker also did well out of the bullpen, each pitching an inning and recording a strikeout while not allowing any base runners.

Despite Fitchburg State pitching allowing 12 hits, eight walks, and committing two errors, they managed to strike out the Blue Streaks 12 times.

John Carroll will take on Rochester Institute of Technology on Tuesday, March 8 in a double header at North East Regional Park in Davenport.  First pitch of game one is set for 2:30pm.
