Women's Basketball Posts Up Revenge Win over Marietta on the Road

MARIETTA, Ohio -- A trip to Ban Johnson Arena presented an opportunity for John Carroll Women's Basketball on Saturday.

The Blue Streaks had a shot to avenge the team's only Ohio Athletic Conference loss this season, an 81-80 nailbiter loss to Marietta at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center on December 18.

The Blue Streaks didn't waste the chance, and the rematch wasn't close. The Blue & Gold brought forth a win over the Pioneers at the "Banjo," 83-67.

John Carroll's excellence inside and outstanding defense did the trick in the end. The Blue Streaks enjoyed a huge scoring advantage in the paint, 52-22, and forced a marvelous 22 turnovers that led to 25 JCU points.

The No. 8/9 Blue Streaks now sail to 17-2 overall, 11-1 in OAC play.

The Pioneers looked comfortable on their home court early on, roaring to an 11-4 advantage in the opening 4:34. Marietta's 7-point lead would be the high water mark for the hosts. The rest of the first quarter belonged to JCU, as the visitors galloped to an 11-5 spurt to close out the period. The top highlight came with 5 seconds left, as Hannah Bouchy sank a triple-hit for JCU's first lead of the game, 17-16.

Marietta and John Carroll traded points early in the second, with the Pioneers taking a modest 24-23 lead at the 6:05 mark. Marietta would not score the rest of the stanza, as JCU clamped down on defense.

John Carroll caught a rhythm down the stretch of the second session. Abby Adler sank a 3-pointer and the Blue Streaks jammed home 8 points in the paint, gallivanting into the locker room with a 36-24 lead.

The Pioneers tried to counterpunch in the third, but every move was shadowed by the Blue Streaks. Adler and Gabrielle Gevaudan cashed in on 3-pointers to keep the paint open for the JCU forwards. The Pioneers had no answers, so the JCU lead ballooned to 17 at one point. Marietta did manage to slim the margin to 63-54 entering the fourth.

The Pioneers pressed like mad in the fourth, but the Blue Streaks broke it each time efficiently. So, the JCU lead never again dwindled under 10 points. John Carroll's guards drove the bus, as Sarah Balfour, Adler, and Gevaudan all scored to negate Marietta's aggressive defense and prevent a home-cooked comeback.

Of JCU's seven scorers, six hit double-figures. Gevaudan and Underwood poured in season-high point totals of 17 and 16, respectively. Gevaudan's 17 points represented a career-best, while Underwood tied her career-best mark of 16 achieved vs. Denison earlier this season. Both were brilliant on Saturday for JCU.

Nagy and Heffington both hit double-digits in points for the 18th time in 19 games. Nagy notched 14 points, 6 rebounds and 5 blocks, while Heffington garnered a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, along with 6 assists. Adler nabbed 11 points and Balfour secured 10.

As a team, JCU shot exactly 50% (36-of-72) from the field, while holding Marietta to just 34.8% (24-of-69). The Blue Streaks played a well-rounded game today, as evidenced by 23 assists and 10 steals.

John Carroll now will get set to host Otterbein on Wednesday at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center. JCU won the first contest, 52-47.
