Bullpen, Bullish Bats Bring End to 5-Game Skid for JCU Baseball

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- A trip to Virginia turned out to be the trick for ending a losing skid for John Carroll Baseball.

The Blue Streaks ended a 5-game losing streak on Friday, besting the University of Mary Washington Eagles on the road.

The Blue Streaks survived a late rally by the Eagles, clinging onto an 8-7 win to open a 3-game series with Mary Washington.

After a rough day at the plate on Wednesday, John Carroll fired up the bats on Friday. With none on and two out in the first, the offense came alive. Luke Galioto began the fun with a single, Victor Glaser kept it going with a single of his own, and Bennett Cavaretta nabbed a basehit to score Galioto. Jared Orwell busted a double to right to plate Glaser before Jack Beiter broke it open with a 2-run single to center.

With a 4-0 lead to protect, Mitchell Midea started with confidence. The veteran allowed an early double, but got out of it with no damage. Joe Olsavsky opened the second frame with a walk and later scored on a Cavaretta single, extending the margin to 5-0.

Midea flirted with trouble in the second and third, allowing hits, but didn't surrender any runs. He eventually got burned in the fourth, but it was just a first-degree variety, so JCU led 5-1 entering the fifth.

An inning-opening walk in the fifth again spelled trouble for the Eagles. An Orwell double and a Beiter sacrifice fly made the hosts pay, as JCU stretched the advantage to 7-1.

The Eagles got revenge in the bottom half of the stanza. A walk and back-to-back doubles allowed a couple runs to cross, and spelled the end of Midea's day. Owen Gerba then entered, surrendering a pair of walks before passing the pill to Maxwell Schumaker. The junior couldn't prevent more bleeding, but he did staunch it, ending the frame with JCU still ahead at 7-5.

All then stood quiet until the bottom of the seventh inning. The Eagles used a pair of singles and a JCU error to score an unearned run, slimming the margin to just one run. But Sylvan Wiley prevented a tie game, striking out the third out of the frame.

John Carroll couldn't purchase any additional insurance, but with Wiley cruising on the bump, it didn't matter. The savvy sophomore provided 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, earning the first save of his career.

Cavaretta and Orwell each enjoyed 2-for-4, 2 RBI days at the dish. Beiter's 3 RBI effort also proved to be essential in the win.

With the victory, JCU advances to 3-8 on the year. Mary Washington and John Carroll will meet for two more on Saturday. The opener will be a 7-inning affair, and the second will be a 9-inning game. Matthew Aukerman and Andrew Steele are slated to get the starts.
