Spartans Silence Softball's Sticks in Return to Northeast Ohio

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- John Carroll Softball returned to Northeast Ohio on Wednesday, facing off with Case Western Reserve University.

Unfortunately, the rain followed the Blue Streaks back home, as JCU and CWRU lost a couple innings in the first game due to the rain, and all of the second game.

The first game counted, as the affair was called after the game became official following the fifth inning. The Spartans silenced JCU's bats, managing to no-hit the Blue Streaks while providing enough offense for a win.

Following a quick inning and a half, the Spartans scratched across the first run of the game in the bottom of the second. With 1 out, the Spartans clipped a double and then a single for the initial tally of the game. Thanks to a stolen base and then a groundout, Case Western Reserve got another to fire ahead 2-0 after two.

In the next frame, John Carroll halved the lead. Kendall Trunzo got aboard on a walk, and then advanced to second on a groundout. Two CWRU wild pitches allowed Trunzo to dash home to trim the deficit to 2-1.

The Spartans authored a swift and decisive response. A 2-run double in the bottom of the third pushed the margin to 4-1. The Spartans added one more in the sixth, setting the final score at 5-1.

The rain began in the top of the sixth, and lightning ensured no more softball would be played at Mather Field.

The Spartans surrendered only four JCU baserunners, all via walks. Danielle Orendi accepted the loss for JCU in the circle.

The Blue Streaks drop to 4-5 on the year with the loss. John Carroll will return to the friendly confines of Bracken Field on Thursday, welcoming Oberlin College for a doubleheader (weather permitting).
