7 Extrabase Hits, Including 2 Cavaretta Dingers, Guide JCU Baseball to a Win at Oberlin

OBERLIN, Ohio -- Consistent offense was the name of the game for John Carroll Baseball on Thursday.

In a matinee single road game at Oberlin, the Blue Streaks scored in every inning but one, with plenty of bombs powering the way.

The Blue Streaks accelerated to an 11-3 victory on the road, advancing to 6-9 on the year.

Jared Orwell got the bats going in the bottom of the first with a double. Landen Glaser quickly brought him home with a single to right center for the game's first run.

John Carroll raced for more runs in the second. Connor Mayle got aboard with one out via a hit by pitch, and quickly rounded the bases thanks to a Matthew Springer triple. A Henry Haracz groundout sent Springer home. Joe Olsavsky then walked, stole second, and scored via a Ben Surman single. After two, JCU led, 4-0.

Duncan Cappar gave way to Andrew Steele after two scoreless innings. Steele tore through his three batters in third, and soon had more cushion. Bennett Cavaretta did the honors, rocketing a moon shot on a 2-2 count for the 5-0 lead.

Springer clipped another triple in the bottom of the fourth, and made his way home on a passed ball for the sixth run of the ballgame.

Joe Smith checked into the game in the fifth and surrendered a run, but it didn't matter. Landen Glaser launched a solo shot over the fence in right to get the run back at 7-1.

John Gavric kept bullpen day going strong in the sixth, garnering a quick 1-2-3 inning. Oberlin did get to him in the seventh with a solo homer, but this JCU offense wouldn't let go the offense go unpunished. With two out and Luke Chlystek on second, Cavaretta haunted the Yeomen again. The veteran belted a 2-2 pitch into the cheap seats for a 9-2 score.

To make absolutely certain, John Carroll piled on another couple runs in the eighth. Jared Orwell tapped a 2-run single through the left side of the infield to set the gap at nine runs. And so, manager Bobby Bell turned to Joe Olsavsky to close it out in the ninth. The sophomore, an infielder making his first career pitching appearance, allowed a run, but finalized an 11-3 conquest.

Cavaretta enjoyed a career day at the dish. The grad student notched a career-best 2 homers and 3 RBI. Orwell and Glaser also thrived to the tune of 2-for-5 days with 2 RBI apiece. Springer's 2-for-3 day with 3 runs and 2 RBI is also to be admired. As a team, JCU finished with 12 hits, 7 of the extrabase variety.

Cappar garnered the win on bullpen day, allowing just 3 hits in 2 scoreless frames.

John Carroll will be back at it on Saturday, heading to Muskingum for a twinbill to open Ohio Athletic Conference play.
