PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- On a rainy day in the Steel City, outdoor season began for John Carroll Men's Track & Field.

The Blue Streaks sent distance runners and throwers for Day 1 of the Carnegie Mellon Invitational.

All in all, it was a nice day for the Blue Streaks with some solid results.

Matthew Russo is a pretty busy guy these days, juggling spring football practice while training for outdoor season. His juggling act looked pretty good on Friday, as the freshman flew to third in the shot put with a toss of 14.83m. He also logged a throw of 37.92m in the hammer throw. Not a bad way to break onto the outdoor scene.

Alec Gorman also made his outdoor debut, with a hurl of 29.72m in the hammer.

Ryan Champa, after being named the All-Ohio Freshman of the Year this week, continued his momentum with a time of 9:57.65 in the 3000m Steeplechase. His first time running the race at JCU yielded a fourth-place finish. Jason Freisen also raced outdoors for the first time at JCU, timing at 10:35.32 for 10th.

The 1500m race was full of JCU distance runners plying their craft. Gabe Ernest and Pat White topped the pack. Ernest snagged eighth with a time of 4:05.50 and White notched ninth with a time of 4:06.43. Jack Root (4:08.07, 14th), Barrett Scheatzle (4:08.28, 15th), and Jared Arnold (4:08.91, 17th) all finished within a second of each other. Andrew Miner (4:09.09, 19th), John Shoemaker (4:10.92, 20th), and Matt Costanzo (4:11.78, 23rd) all raced close together. Michael Hvizdos (4:16.93, 26th), Joe Scherer (4:18.76, 28th), Evan Piscitani (4:19.43, 30th), Ryan Kiley (4:21.14, 31st), and James Mangan (4:26.42, 38th) rounded out the JCU pack.

Dominic Delmoro did quite well in his outdoor debut in the 5000m, notching ninth in 15:32.07. Carson Shipley (16:16.48, 22nd) and Alex Jubert (16:24.17, 24th) also repped JCU in the 5k.
