Men's Tennis Enjoying Florida Weather, Splitting Opening Matches

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The trip to the Sunshine State has been a good one so far for the Blue Streaks.

John Carroll Men's Tennis snagged a win on Sunday over Wittenberg before playing a strong North Carolina Wesleyan College team on Tuesday.

The 7-2 win over Wittenberg kickstarted things for the Blue Streaks as the trip began. All but No. 1 doubles and No. 6 singles ended in victories for the Blue & Gold.

Tuesday's match ended with a lopsided 9-0 result for JCU, but the match was very heavily contested. This was not a blowout by any stretch.

In fact, the Blue Streaks gave the Battling Bishops a good run for their money, especially at the No. 5 singles spot. The battle between JCU's Grant Sarnowski and NCWC's Valentin Ancieto was a marvel to watch, as it captivated plenty of fans from both sides.

The first set was won by Sarnowski in a narrow affair, a 7-6 victory. Ancieto, thanks to a powerful strike, earned the second set, 6-4. That set up a tiebreaker set that stretched on and on.

All other matches concluded close to 3 pm, so both teams and all fans crowded to the court where Sarnowski and Ancieto had launched into an all-out war. As the sun beamed down and humidity sapped the strength of the fans who watched, the two duked it out, trading blows. Sarnowski enjoyed plenty of victorious moments, soliciting large cheers from the JCU contingent. But Ancieto stood firm down the stretch and eventually clinched the third set, 11-9.

Logan Langovsky's No. 2 singles match was also one that stretched onward. Langovsky vanquished his foe in the first set, 6-4, before dropping the second set, 6-1. The tiebreaker tested both battlers as the heat and humidity played a role. In the end, Langovsky succumbed to his foe, 10-5, but there was no shame in his defeat.

Langovsky and Mark Beebe also played well at the No. 2 doubles spot, but could not pull off the win, falling 8-4.

Following Tuesday's firmly contested affair, the Blue Streaks have a busy few days ahead. Shaun Keenan's men will face the University of St. Francis (MD) and Hampden-Sydney College on Wednesday at Seminole County's Red Bug Lake Park. The trip concludes on Friday vs. Cedarville.
