Softball Snags Two Huge Wins on a Rare 3-Game Day

CLERMONT, Fla. -- It was quite the busy day for John Carroll Softball.

The Blue Streaks played a rare tripleheader.

The Blue & Gold opened the day bright and early at 10 am, confronting the Simmons Sharks. After experiencing a 4-2 loss, the Blue Streaks bounced back in a big way later in the day.

Nicole Loudin's squad fired off 7-2 and 12-3 victories over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in a satisfying sweep.

The victories at Legends Way in Florida push JCU to 3-2 on the year.

Game 1
John Carroll got a nice effort in the circle from Brianna Callow, but not enough timely hitting to open the day with a win.

The Blue & Gold did scratch the first run across the plate. Alyssia Carmichael reached on an error and then scored on a Gabby Hougan double to right field.

Simmons struck back with a couple runs in the bottom of the third, with a quartet of singles doing the damage and setting the Sharks ahead 2-1. Simmons doubled the lead in the fourth, thanks to a double, single, error, and a sacrifice fly.

John Carroll attempted a comeback in the top of the fifth. Kaylyn Odelli got aboard with a couple outs on a fielder's choice and promptly stole second. Kasyn Scarantine tripled to left center to plate Odelli, but the Blue Streaks could not continue the rally.

Callow accepted the loss, though only two of her runs were earned. She was throwing gas in her JCU debut, firing 10 strikeouts. Callow has a bright future in the Blue & Gold.

Game 2
The Blue Streaks fired out of the gate and set the tone for the second contest of the day.

Crista Nativio reached on a single and advanced to second on an error with 1 out to open up the fun. The Blue Streaks then had to deal with a curveball, as Kasyn Scarantine had to check out of the game after fouling off a ball to her face. She'd later return for game three, but not in game two.

"I've never taken a ball to the face, that's probably the worst injury I've ever had," said Scarantine. "But as soon as I got back in the dugout and felt like I was good enough to play, I wanted to get back out there and help the team. Luckily, it paid off and we won against a very talented team."

One out later, Kristen Jesberger reached on an error, and then Alyssia Carmichael got aboard via an error. JCU took advantage of the visitors' defense, as a Mallory Stonebraker double plated a couple. Entering the second, JCU had a nice 3-0 lead.

The next few innings became a pitchers' duel between JCU's Danielle Orendi and RPI's Erika Holowka. Orendi allowed just two hits in the first five innings, mowing down Engineers in bunches. In the bottom of the fifth, JCU added an insurance run. With runners at the corners and two outs, Tora Walters tore off for second. She drew the throw, allowing Serena Paterno to dash home.

RPI got on the board in the sixth, but Orendi managed to limit the damage to two runs. And her teammates backed her up in the bottom half of the frame, with three Blue Streaks crossing the plate. Kendall Trunzo opened up things with a walk, and then scored on a Gracie Bressoud double. Bressoud later scored on a wild pitch, and then Nativio scored on a Kristen Jesberger sacrifice fly (after reaching on a hit by pitch.

Orendi closed things out in the seventh, pitching an excellent complete game. She surrendered just 2 runs and 5 hits, striking out 5 in the process.

"We talked in between the first and second game about how we were only a few key hits, plays, and intensity from having a very different outcome in the first game," said Head Coach Nicole Loudin. "I love the mentality, attitude, and the way they came back with energy. What we did is unheard of: playing three full games in one day. The way they played with intensity in 19 innings was awesome. I credit the pitching staff for starting the energy in the circle, which radiated out to everyone else."

Game 3
The Blue Streaks' bats were simply unstoppable in the third and final game of the day. Bressoud's game-starting single proved to be a positive sign of things to come. She stole second, and scored after a Crista Nativio walk, a Kasyn Scarantine bunt single, and a Kristen Jesberger walk. A Mallory Stonebraker walk plated Nativio next.

"Kasyn is a baller for that. To experience that ball to the face and be fine and play the next game is awesome," said Loudin.

Serena Paterno then belted a single through the right side, sending Jesberger and Scarantine home. Gabby Hougan got an RBI single of her own to plate Stonebraker. Maddie Traub then took a hit by pitch to load the bases.

Odelli then cranked a sac fly, plating Paterno. An error then allowed Bressoud to get on base and for Traub to tap the plate. After a Bressoud steal, Nativio walked. Scarantine walked to get another run in. At that point, RPI made a pitching change as JCU stood in full control, 8-0.

A Stronebraker walk and a 2-run Paterno single provided the final runs of the inning.

In all, John Carroll tallied 11 runs in a monster frame for the Blue Streaks that the team certainly enjoyed.

"Our entire hitting mentality has been, 'Pick your pitch and your zone, and work on the mental side of the game.' The physical side is there, but cleaning up the mental side of things has been huge, especially with how young we are at certain spots," said Loudin. "They bought in and they attacked it today."

Katie DeBord didn't need much of a cushion, either. The veteran sliced through the RPI lineup, scattering just a few hits over the game. She was excellent in drawing outs from a very solid RPI team.

Bressoud bolstered the lead in the fourth. She slapped a 1-out single and headed to third thanks to a Trunzo walk and a Scarantine single. Jesberger scored Bressoud with a sac fly, setting JCU ahead, 12-0.

RPI broke the shutout for DeBord in the fifth. The Engineers scored three runs, looking to avoid the run-rule defeat, but DeBord slammed the door. The Mason native earned the win, and a deserving one at that.

All three JCU pitchers hurled complete games, as Callow, Orendi, and DeBord all pitched marvelously.

"That's been our mentality all along. You're going to come in, throw complete games, and we won't need to mess around with anything else," said Loudin. "I'm very pleased with what they did. These are three full, complete team games. Everyone contributed to what we did today."

The Blue Streaks tallied 21 runs over the three games, quite the feat for the bats.

"We've been working on discipline lately, and we executed it perfectly today," said Nativio. "Especially with the umpire having a small zone. We did what we were supposed to do, we waited on pitches and got walked as many times as we could. And when we didn't, we got hits."

The Blue Streaks will be back at it on Thursday, facing Wittenberg at 11:15 am and Bluffton at 1:15 pm (times are approximate based on scheduling and weather).
