Baseball Sweeps ONU, Pushes OAC Record to 5-1

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Eight unanswered runs and a 10th inning walk-off double by Joe Olsavsky in game one and stellar pitching and base running in game two helped the John Carroll baseball team to an 8-6 and 4-1 sweep, respectfully, of the Ohio Northern Polar Bears at the Cleveland MetroPark's Talty Field at Brookside Reservation.

The Blue Streaks now move to 5-1 in OAC play and have swept each of their last two conference opponents.

Game 1
Ohio Northern got off to a fast start in the first inning, as they scored three runs on an RBI double and a home run to take a quick 3-0 lead.

The Polar Bears scored three more in the third on two singles and a double to stretch their advantage to 6-0.

However, JCU began to chip away at the ONU lead in the bottom of the third.  With Joe Olsavsky and Henry Haracz on base, Ben Surman hit a two RBI double to get on the board 6-2.  Luke Galioto then hit an RBI double to make it 6-3, and then scored a run on a wild pitch later in the frame to cut away at the lead 6-4.

The Polar Bears held on to their 6-4 lead until the bottom of the sixth, when Justin Hanley scored off of a RBI single by Matthew Springer to make it a one run game, 6-5.

Down by one in the bottom of the seventh inning, it took a team effort to score Surman as the Blue Streaks tied the game 6-6 on a Hanley fielders choice.

John Carroll had a chance to win the game in the ninth as Landen Glaser reached on a single and Hanley walked with one out, but came away empty handed on a fielders choice out and strikeout.

All three Polar Bears went down in the 10th, with one out coming on a spectacular diving catch in right center field made by Matthew Springer.

In the bottom frame, Springer and Haracz led off the inning with singles and moved into scoring position on a passed ball before Olsavsky stepped up for the second time in as many weeks as he hit a ground rule double to walk it off for the Blue Streaks.

Starter Mitchell Midea pitched 6.2 innings and struck out six batters while Andrew Steele threw the final three innings of the game and gave up only one hit.

JCU outhit Ohio Northern 14-11 and got three hits each from Surman and Springer.

Game 2
The Blue Streaks were the first to add one to the scoreboard in game two, as Surman scored on an error by shortstop Chayton Overholt of ONU to take an early 1-0 lead.

John Carroll capitalized on more Polar Bear mistakes in the third on a wild pitch that scored Galioto from third to make it 2-0.

The Blue Streaks scored twice more in the bottom of the sixth on a Logan LaMere singled to score Galioto and Jared Orwell knocked in Glaser on the next at bat as they pushed their lead 4-0.

Ohio Northern answered with a single to score a run in the seventh inning, but John Carroll was able to step up on the mound to close out the game.

With two outs in the eighth and ninth innings, ONU had runners on second and third but could not score as Duncan Cappar and Owen Gerba came up with huge strikeouts at the end of each inning, respectfully, to end any Polar Bear threat.

Matthew Aukerman had a spectacular start for JCU as he pitched 5.2 innings while striking out nine batters and giving up no runs.

The Blue and Gold will be back in action on Tuesday, April 12 in a doubleheader match up in Alliance, OH as they take on Mount Union.  Game one is scheduled for 1:00 pm while game two is set for 4:00 pm.
