Rainy Day Results in Loss and Tie to Mount Union for JCU Softball

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- On a rainy day at Bracken Field, it was a wacky day of softball.

The University of Mount Union Purple Raiders came to town, and managed to hold the Blue Streaks off the board. Despite this, John Carroll managed to eke out a tie in the second game.

The Blue Streaks dropped the opening game, 14-0, before settling for a 0-0 tie in the backend of the twinbill.

With the loss and tie, the Blue Streaks dropped to 10-9-2 overall and 3-4-1 in Ohio Athletic Conference play.

Game 1
The Purple Raiders fired out to a hot start and never relinquished it.

Mount Union tallied 3 runs in the first inning, getting to the Blue Streaks. The visitors added four more in the second inning, courtesy of a solo homerun, a 2-run single, and a RBI triple. The Purple Raiders' 7-0 lead would be insurmountable.

Mount Union plated another run in the fourth, and supplemented the lead with a 6-run fifth frame. Mount Union walked away with a 14-0 victory, as JCU managed just 1 hit. Katie DeBord accepted the loss in the circle.

Game 2
The backend of the twinbill on Wednesday was the type of game for you if you love pitching.

The Blue Streaks and Purple Raiders sent a total of 49 batters to the plate. Just 7 tallied hits, as the pitchers were on fire.

John Carroll's Brianna Callow and Mount Union's Alyssa Rose traded scoreless frames, never tiring despite the consistent onslaught of great hitters stepping up to the dish.

Mount Union opened the game with a single, but stranded the runner. Kasyn Scarantine garnered a walk and Gabby Hougan single, but the Purple Raiders escaped. This would be the theme of the day.

Callow cruised through the second. Kendall Trunzo doubled with 1 out in the bottom of the frame, but she got stuck on the basepaths. The Purple Raiders also doubled in the top of the third, but got nothing else. Alyssia Carmichael and Hougan got singles in the bottom of the third, but nothing doing again.

In the bottom of the fourth, John Carroll got two runners aboard with two outs. But Rose struck out the side in response in dramatic fashion, keeping it scoreless. In the top of the sixth, Mount Union left two stranded. So, the score stood tied entering the seventh.

An error and a walk put two on base for the Purple Raiders in the seventh, but Callow stood strong. Rose also allowed a walk, but stood just as stout. So, the game went to extras.

Mount Union got a runner in the eighth, but she got stuck at first. Rose didn't allow JCU to get anything going in home frame. Callow fired past her foes in the ninth, while JCU threatened. Trunzo walked with one out, but Rose drew a double play.

With the rain coming down a bit more and the darkness approaching, the umps called the game. And just like that, the Blue Streaks tied for the second time in three weeks.

What are the odds that the Blue Streaks would tie twice in the span of less than a month after having just one tie in the 1,229 games in program history from 1984-2021?

Either way, the Blue Streaks are now 10-9-2 on the year, 3-4-1 in OAC play. John Carroll outhit the Purple Raiders in the second game, 4-3, with Hougan accounting for two of them. Callow pitched a marvel of a game in the circle. The freshman allowed just 3 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings, striking out 5 batters.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action on Thursday, heading to Ada to battle the Polar Bears.
