Bats Light Up as JCU Upends Capital Twice

The bats were clicking for the John Carroll baseball team as they completed the sweep of Capital on Friday with a final score of 15-7 in game one and 17-7 in game two.

The Blue Streaks now move to 7-3 in OAC play and 13-13 on the year.

Game 1

Friday's first contest started off well for John Carroll.  Joe Olsavsky got the game started on a daring move as he stole home to put the Blue Streaks up 1-0.

The second inning was much the same as Connor Mayle was able to score thanks to a sacrifice fly from Henry Haracz to increase John Carroll's lead to 2-0.

Meanwhile, JCU's Mitch Midea was phenomenal on the mound, holding Capital to just one run through five innings. In six innings pitched, Midea finished with an 11 strikeouts yet again proving himself as one of the top pitchers in the OAC.

John Carroll's offense did not let Midea's hot start go to waste as they totaled three runs in the fourth inning courtesy of back to back home runs from Haracz and Olsavsky to make it 5-1.

The Blue Streak bats remained hot in the sixth as Benjamin Surman homered to right center allowing Haracz and Connor Mayle to score. Capital answered with a couple runs of their own to bring the score to 8-3.

But John Carroll left no room for a potential comeback after a four-run seventh inning led by Justin Hanley's home run, one of two he would have on the game. Haracz continued his offensive domination by scoring a two-run homer to take a comfortable 12-3 lead.

In the bottom half of the frame, Capital chipped away at the Blue Streak lead following a three-run homer from junior Logan White.

Even with the six-run lead, the Blue Streaks continued its offensive dominance with three more runs in the eighth inning behind a three-run home run from Hanley, widening their lead to 15-6.

Samuel Basso and John Gavric threw the final three innings of the game as John Carroll secured a 15-7 win.

Haracz tallied a career-best five RBIs while Hanley had a season-high four and Surman tacked on three.

Game 2

John Carroll's offense picked up right where it left off in game two as they cruised to a 17-7 victory in game two of the double-header.

Luke Galioto began the scoring for the Blue Streaks with a single allowing Olsavsky to score. Landen Glaser followed it up with an RBI single of his own leading Surman to score. Hanley capped off the top of the first with an RBI double giving the Blue Streaks a 3-0.

The second inning was a lot like the first as an RBI double from Surman and a single from Galioto increased their lead to five. Glaser topped it off with a two-run homer to left center field to bring the Blue Streak lead to seven.

John Carroll's Matthew Aukerman fed off of the offensive energy with a fantastic start of his own. Aukerman struck out five Capital batters in the first three innings. He finished with eight strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched.

John Carroll's Erik Daugenti got in on the scoring as he blasted a solo home run of his own to begin the third inning. An Olsavsky single allowed Mayle to score to increase the lead to nine. Captial's offense continued to be stagnant as they had no answer for Aukerman's pitching.

The Blue Streaks added two more runs to their lead courtesy of a Haracz triple. He was soon brought home by Joe Olsavsky to bring the lead to 11-0.

Capitals made it interesting with a six-run sixth inning to cut the Blue Streak lead to four. A couple of RBI singles from Brandan Barnette and Cole Callaghan began the Capital run. It was capped off by a Logan White double to bring the score to 11-6.

Yet, as John Carroll has done all day, responded with a scoring run of their own. The inning began with a wild pitch, allowing Olsavsky to score. A Jared Orwell single allowed Tyler Gast to score, and an RBI double by Mayle brought the lead to nine. Logan LaMere topped it off with a single of his own to give the Blue Streaks a 16-6 lead.

Both teams added a run in the final two innings to finish off the game.

The Blue and Gold will be back in action on Wednesday, April 20 in a doubleheader matchup scheduled at Schweickert Field in University Heights as they take on Heidelberg. Game one is scheduled for 1:00 pm while game two is set for 4:00 pm.
