Men's Lacrosse Celebrates Senior Day by Catapulting Past Comets

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- April 2, 2022 proved to be a day of celebration at John Carroll University for a number of reasons. In the midst of the Admitted Student Celebration for the Class of 2026 and the debut of the Short Family Tennis Center, John Carroll Men's Lacrosse celebrated Senior Day at Don Shula Stadium as the Blue Streaks faced the Capital Comets.

In front of a number of students, alumni, and potential future Blue Streaks, the Blue & Gold put on a clinic on both sides of the field as they captured a 21-6 win, improving their record to 9-1.

Despite the lopsided victory, it was Capital who captured the early momentum with the first score of the game. But soon after that, the Blue Streaks found their rhythm, rolling to a 20-0 run.

Tanner Gill-Snow found Brendan Whitty for the first JCU goal at the 7:50 mark, and just seconds later, Brendan Hein linked up with Jared Gorenflo, who scored to give the Blue Streaks a 2-1 advantage.

At 5:53, Morgan Morrell scored his first goal of the contest and was swiftly followed by Gorenflo converting off a Whitty feed. Then, the Blue & Gold took advantage of a man-up opportunity with two goals; one scored by Morrell off another Whity feed and the other by Kevin Hack off a Morrell assist.

A mere few moments after, Whitty found Jacob Hoexum, who slotted his first goal of the season into the back of the net. The Blue Streaks led 8-1 at the end of the first quarter after Hack scored off a Carter Pavain assist.

JCU opened the second quarter in the same fiery fashion, as Whitty scored from behind the net from a Pavain pass, and Gill-Snow scored from a Whitty assist. After that, Morrell scored off an Ian Flynn pass, then Morrell found Matt Berdysiak who netted his first score of the game to make it 12-1.

Later, Whitty scored by himself, before assisting Gorenflo 15 seconds later to cap the first half with a 14-1 lead.

In the second half, goals from Hack, Whitty (Berdysiak assist), Flynn (Whitty assist), and three goals from Berdysiak (Whitty assist and two Pavain assists) gave JCU a 20-1 lead.

However, Capital snapped the Blue Streak 20-0 run with a goal at the end of the quarter, making the score 20-2 through three periods.

Capital went on a run in the fourth quarter with four goals in the first ten minutes of the final period, but ultimately, the deficit proved to be too much as the Blue & Gold emerged victorious. The 21-6 win is the most goals scored and largest margin of victory against Capital in series history.

As a team, the Blue & Gold were very successful in a number of ways. 17 of their 21 goals came off assists, 35 of 56 shots were on goal, they picked up 38 ground balls, cleared 21 of 25 attempts, and caused 10 turnovers.

Individually, Whitty (four goals, seven assists), Morrell (four goals, two assists), Berdysiak (four goals, one assist), and Pavain (four assists) all finished with four points or more on the day. Cam Cecere led the way with eight ground balls and 16 faceoff wins. Hein added four ground balls and Matt Russo contributed with three.

After the game, the team and remaining fans celebrated the seniors and all their accomplishments so far throughout their careers: Jake Caress, Cam Cecere, Ian Flynn, Jacob Hoexum, Robbie Robinson, Charlie Shaver, Reed Stuhlreyer, Johnny Wilson III, and Cullen Zarek.

The Blue Streaks will travel to Tiffin to take on Heidelberg on Wednesday, April 6.
