Daugenti's Walk-Off in Game 1 and Team's Late Surge in Game 2 Leads to Sweep Over Heidelberg

TIFFIN, Ohio – Despite being the "home" team at an away location, the John Carroll Blue Streaks (15-13, 9-3 OAC) proved their resiliency in both games, finishing with a 9-8 walk-off winner in 13 innings and an 8-5 victory against Heidelberg.

With the victories, the Blue Streaks completed back to back sweeps, resulting in a four game win streak.

Game 1

The first contest of the afternoon proved to be a battle for both teams that extended across 13 innings.

Erik Daugenti's walk-off home run sealed the victory for the Blue Streaks after taking the first pitch of his at bat deep to left center field.

Wednesday's extra-inning win marked the most innings played for the Blue Streaks in a single game since Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018, when John Carroll defeated Allegheny 10-9 in the 15th inning.

It wasn't until the third inning of the game that either team tallied a run. Heidelberg took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third, but a double from Benjamin Surman brought home two runs for the Blue Streaks in the bottom of the third to tie things up.

John Carroll's bats continued to heat up as Luke Galioto homered to left field, resulting in a 4-2 lead. In the fifth inning, John Carroll added to their lead while Gailoto and Joe Olsavsky recorded RBIs.

After the Blue & Gold's dominant fourth and fifth innings, Heidelberg rallied from being down four runs to send the game to extra innings with both teams tied 6-6.

The 10th inning proved to be a back and forth battle between both OAC teams. John Carroll and Heidelberg came away with two runs in the inning, resulting in an 8-8 tie at the end of the 10th inning.

John Carroll's two runs came courtesy of a homer from Henry Haracz that brought home Matt Springer.

Surman and Haracz led the team in RBIs, recording two each. Springer led the team in hits going 5-6 at the plate, including one double.

In emergency relief, Olsavsky finished the final three innings on the mound and only gave up two hits and struck out three batters. He also earned his first career win.

Game 2

John Carroll's momentum continued to flourish as they headed into game two. The Blue Streaks recorded three hits in the bottom of the first inning, earning them two runs.

A single up the middle from Galioto resulted in an RBI as Olsavsky scored. Moments later, a single from Landen Glaser pushed Galioto to third base. A sacrifice fly from Justin Hanley provided an opportunity for Galioto to cross home plate.

Soon enough, the Student Princes took control of the game as John Carroll surrendered three runs over the second and third inning.

Over the course of the fourth and fifth inning, pitcher Jon Ambro only gave up two hits.

In the bottom of the seventh, the bats came alive for the Blue Streaks as they surged past the Student Princes, gaining an 8-5 lead. Surman started off the inning with a walk, but advanced to second moments later as he stole the base. Another walk and Glaser reaching on an error, resulted in bases loaded for the Blue Streaks.

The Student Princes continued to remain in trouble, as Hanley walked, resulting in John Carroll going up 6-5. With bases still loaded, John Carroll continued to take advantage of Heidelberg's mistakes as Galioto and Glaser scored on a passed ball, giving the Blue & Gold an 8-5 lead.

The game finished early due to the sun going down as the Blue Streaks finished things out in the bottom of the eighth.

Hanley finished the game with three RBIs, while Olsavsky led the team in hits with three, followed by Surman with two.

John Carroll will be back in action on Saturday, April 23, as they take on the #1 team in Division III Marietta. The OAC doubleheader is scheduled to be played at Schweickert Field in University Heights, with start times of 1 and 4 p.m., respectively.
