Early Runs Not Enough as Baseball Gets Swept By #1 Marietta

John Carroll looked to extend their four game win streak at Donges Field in Ashland, OH on Sunday afternoon, but ultimately came up short as they fell to Marietta 13-7 in game one and 11-6 in game two against the #1 ranked team in Division III baseball, the Marietta Pioneers.

The Blue Streaks now move to 9-5 in OAC play and 15-15 on the year.

Game One

Sunday's game one started well for John Carroll. Joe Olsavsky managed a triple in the first at bat of the game. This was followed up with an RBI groundout by Ben Surman allowing Olsavsky to score to bring the score to 1-0.

Mitchell Midea began to heat up in the second for the Blue and Gold as he struck out two Marietta batters and forced a groundout for the third out. The third was much the same for him as he forced two more ground outs to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of John Carroll.

Marietta's offense eventually broke through in the fourth via an RBI double by Brett Carson allowing Drew Holderbach to score. Moments later, a sacrifice fly from Alex Richter allowed Carson to score to give the Pioneers a 2-1 advantage.

John Carroll's offense continued to struggle in the fifth, but Midea's sharp play kept the game close. Three fly outs against three Marietta batters made for a quick fifth inning.

Marietta's offense hit their stride in the sixth and they never looked back. Trent Castle's RBI double brought two runners home and began what would be a game-defining scoring run for the Pioneers. Following a quick Blue Streak pitching change as Owen Gerba entered for Midea, Marietta's Will Keefe tripled down the right field line allowing three more runners to score. An RBI single by Alex Page capped off a six-run inning for the Pioneers to bring the score to 8-1.

John Carroll's offense yet again failed to muster any runs in the seventh as the Pioneers sent down all three Blue Streak batters.

Marietta added onto their lead in the eighth with a few more singles to bring their lead to ten. A Holderbach double and a Matthew Busby run-scoring ground out brought the score to 13-1 in favor of the Pioneers.

The Blue Streaks did not go down without a fight as they went on a scoring run of their own in the bottom of the ninth. An Erik Daugenti RBI double allowed Landen Glaser to score. Following a couple of RBI singles from Jared Orwell and Matthew Springer, Joe Olsavsky homered to left field to bring in two more runs for the Blue Streaks as the deficit was cut to just seven. A Luke Galioto double added one more run for the Blue Streaks but they were unable to complete the comeback.

Game Two

John Carroll's offense started strong, but sputtered out toward the end of the game.

The scoring began with a sacrifice fly from Luke Galioto, which allowed Joe Olsavsky to score.

Marietta's offense made up for a lackluster first inning with a monster six-run second inning. The scoring run began with a three-run homer from Marietta's Trent Castle. An RBI single by Turner Hill and an RBI double by Logan Vietmeier added a couple more runs for the Pioneers. The strong second inning was capped off with an RBI single from Holderbach to bring the score to 6-1 in favor of the Pioneers.

John Carroll was able to stop some of the bleeding in the bottom of the second courtesy of a solo-home run from Justin Hanley to bring the score to 6-2. Yet, the Pioneers continued to pour it on in the third with an RBI single from Hill and a two-run homer from Damian Yenzi to make it 9-2.

The fourth brought much of the same as Marietta added two more runs to their total due to a couple of sacrifice flies. Meanwhile, John Carroll struggled to cut into the deficit.

The Blue and Gold made it a game with a big fifth inning. An RBI triple from Daugenti brought in three key runs. Hanley continued his solid day with an RBI single to bring Daugenti home to bring the score to 11-6 in favor of Marietta.

Following a scoring frenzy through the first five innings, both offenses halted for the remainder of the game. Pioneers pitcher Sam Matthews came in to begin the sixth and he was quick to make an impact. He finished with six strikeouts while only surrendering two hits as John Carroll lost to Marietta 11-6 in game two.

The Blue and Gold will be back in action on Wednesday, April 27 at Fishel Field to take on non-conference opponent Hiram. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 P.M.
