Men's Lacrosse Clinches #2 Seed in OAC Tournament with Victory Over Mount Union

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- With a first round bye in next week's OAC Tournament on the line, John Carroll's Men's Lacrosse team took care of business as they defeated Mount Union 19-5 in both teams' regular season finale.

The Blue Streaks wrapped up the regular season by earning the #2 seed in the OAC Tournament and will play an opponent at home on Wednesday, May 4th to be determined.

Defense and offensive efficiency played a major factor in the victory, as JCU committed a season-low 11 turnovers and outshot the Purple Raiders 68-17.

"The defense is the backbone of the team," Blue Streak head coach Joe Rautenstrauch said. "It's something we take pride in, to be a team that's hard to score against. "It's always our unit versus their unit and what we can do to make sure the other team doesn't score."

John Carroll started off the game on fire, striking right out of the gate, with a Carter Pavain goal just 12 seconds in.

From there, the Blue Streaks began to show their outstanding team chemistry and dynamic offense, as three more players scored to add to a 4-0 lead.

Matt Berdysiak also started off the game hot, putting up a hat trick in the first quarter alone.

Mount Union was able to respond with two goals late in the period, but the Blue Streaks held a 7-2 advantage heading into the second quarter.

With great defense being played on both sides, the scoring slowed significantly, as each team scored just once in the period.

Up 8-3 at the start of the third, John Carroll continued its tremendous defensive efforts, letting up no goals in the stanza, whilst scoring three of their own.

The Blue Streaks added on eight more goals in the fourth, with four more coming from Berdysiak, which put him at seven goals on the night.

Throughout the game, five different Blue Streaks had two goals each to complement Berdysiak, while Brendan Whitty tallied six assists.

John Carroll will look to ride its #2 seed momentum into the OAC Tournament after losing to the #1 seeded Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets on Wednesday, April 20 by just one goal.

"I think for us we are trying to reset a little bit," Rautenstrauch said.  "The season didn't go as we planned, but we got the bye. The playoffs are different, and we have an older group of guys who know how to win."

By taking the No. 2 seed, the Blue Streaks will have a first-round bye. John Carroll will host the winner of the OAC Quarterfinal, which pits the #3 seed vs. the #6 seed. The OAC Semifinal is set for Wednesday, May 4 at 7 pm.
