Men's Lacrosse Steamrolls Polar Bears En Route to OAC Championship Game

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Morgan Morrell was the star of the show for the Blue Streaks on Wednesday night at Don Shula Stadium.

Courtesy of stellar defense and Morrell's offensive spark, John Carroll secured a 15-4 victory against Ohio Northern University in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinal contest.

With the win, the Blue Streaks will advance to the OAC Tournament Championship for the sixth consecutive season. The Blue and Gold improved to 15-2 on the season and 8-1 in the OAC.

Morrell's eight goals broke the record for the most goals scored in a postseason game in the program. Morrell's record broke the previous record set by Declan O'Grady in 2017.

"It wasn't just me doing all the dodges, it was coming from assists," said Morrell. "It started with a lot of guys making the first play and then I would get open and could finish it. It was a full team offense today, which was great to see."

John Carroll's offensive gears began turning in the first period as Morrell scored at the 9:09 mark. From this point on, the Blue Streaks scored 12 unanswered goals.

"We knew they were going to give us their best go at the beginning of the game," said Head Coach Joe Rautenstrauch. "Since we're defending OAC Champions, teams are gonna give us everything they got. We have to be patient and smart early, make adjustments and take it to them."

In the first period, the scoring for both sides was slow, as Carter Pavain and Morrell were the only scorers for John Carroll.

The second period featured a scoring spree for the Blue Streaks, as Morrell scored four goals. Kevin Hack, Cullen Zarek and Matt Berdysiak all scored individual goals for John Carroll, respectively.

Heading into halftime, John Carroll held a comfortable 9-1 lead over the Polar Bears.

Coming out of the locker room, the Blue Streaks picked their offense up right where they left it. John Carroll's scoring streak continued as Morrell, Zarek and Ian Flynn all found the back of the net.

It wasn't until the 7:32 mark of the third period that the Blue Streaks would surrender a goal to Ohio Northern, making the game 12-2.

John Carroll continued to build upon their lead courtesy of a pair of goals from Morrell and Brendan Whitty.

At the 7:49 minute mark, Morrell broke the program record for goals in a postseason game, securing his eighth tally of the evening, pushing John Carroll up 15-3.

Whitty also made history, eclipsing 300 points for his career at John Carroll. It's been quite the career for the Kensington, Maryland native.

Heading into the OAC Championship, the Blue Streaks plan to continue playing as they always do.

"I just think we have so much experience on this team that has been to OAC Championships and OAC Tournaments," said Rautenstrauch. "Our biggest focus, cliche or not, is just play our game, play John Carroll Lacrosse for 60 minutes, which encompasses, hounding ground balls, playing hard nose defense for the whole shot clock, clearing the ball and playing hard until the ball is in the back of the net."

The Blue Streaks will take on the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets in the Ohio Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday, May 7. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m. in Berea, Ohio.
