Baseball Shuts Out Hiram in Special Game At Progressive Field

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- For the first time in 1,821 days, the John Carroll baseball team played at Progressive Field, the home of the MLB's Cleveland Guardians.

In their seventh game at the Guardians' home, the Blue Streaks improved their record to 4-3 all-time at Progressive Field as they defeated the Hiram Terriers 4-0.

Justin Hanley and Henry Haracz both finished the afternoon with two hits for the Blue & Gold.

In the bottom of the first inning, the Blue Streaks built off their momentum from Wednesday night's 11th inning 7-6 win.

John Carroll took full advantage of an error from Hiram's third baseman in the bottom of the first, as Hanley reached on an error, bringing Ben Surman across the plate, giving JCU a 1-0 lead.

In the second inning, Joe Smith continued his pitching success as he only gave up two hits to Hiram. John Carroll's offense got right back to work as a Matt Springer double set up for a solid second inning. After an error by the shortstop, Springer scored, adding another run for the Blue Streaks.

John Carroll made a pitching change at the top of the third, as Andrew Steele relieved Smith. Steele recorded a 1-2-3 inning at the top of the third.

The scoring remained slow for both sides throughout the game as the next run came in the bottom of the sixth.

Joe Olsavsky, continued his hitting success as he singled, bringing home Haracz, extending JCU's lead to 3-0. Olsavasky then crossed home plate, marking John Carroll's second run of the afternoon courtesy of a Hiram error.

Henry Darrow returned to the mound for the Blue & Gold for the first time since tearing his ACL last season. Darrow notched two strikeouts in his season debut, as Hiram's batters went three up, three down in the inning.

Hiram tried to mount a comeback in the ninth inning as they recorded a hit, but Olsavsky recorded all three outs on the mound to seal the win.

With the win, the Blue Streaks improve to 17-15 overall and 9-5 in OAC play. Next up, JCU will travel to Westerville to compete against Otterbein in an OAC doubleheader. The games are scheduled to begin at 1 and 4 p.m., respectively.
