Offense Flutters as Cardinals Sweep Blue Streaks

WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- In a key series with Otterbein to gain momentum before the OAC Tournament in two weeks, the Blue Streak baseball team fluttered as they were swept by the Cardinals 14-1 and 9-3, respectfully, in Westerville.

Game 1
Otterbein did not waste any time getting on the board after an hour rain delay postponed the start of the game as Sam Edgell hit a two RBI double to take a quick 2-0 lead in the second.

The Cardinals extended their lead 3-0 courtesy of a solo home run in the third.  They tacked on more in the third on a single and a sacrifice fly to go up 5-0.

JCU did manage a run in the sixth on a Landen Glaser sacrifice fly, and had runners on second and third with one out in the seventh.  However, the Cardinals forced a strikeout and a pop out from the Blue Streaks to surrender no runs.

From then on, John Carroll could not put together a rally as Otterbein scored three runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth.

The Cardinals outhit the Blue Streaks 21-10 while Justin Hanley and Bennett Cavaretta each had multiple hits.

Game 2
John Carroll started the scoring off with a Matthew Springer RBI single to take a 1-0 lead in the second.

However, Otterbein answered right back on a two RBI single, RBI double, and fielder's choice in the bottom frame to go up 4-1.

Luke Galioto scored on a throwing error in the third to make it 4-2, but with runners on second and third with one out, JCU could not put more runs on the board as Hanley struck out and Erik Daugenti lined out.

The Cardinals continued to attack and add insurance runs on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single to take a 6-2 advantage in the third.

Later in the fourth, Otterbein got two more runs courtesy of an RBI double and a groundout to increase their lead to six.

Henry Haracz scored on another throwing error to get within five in the fifth, but the offense on both sides sputtered as the only other run scored in the game was on a sacrifice fly from the Cardinals in the sixth.

After Haracz scored in the fifth, JCU managed only one base runner the rest of the game.

Jared Orwell was the lone Blue Streak with multiple hits in the game.

The Blue and Gold (17-17, 9-7 OAC) are scheduled to play Wooster in a non-conference matchup on Sunday, May 1 at 1:00pm at Schweickert Field for Senior Day and then play the Fighting Scots on the road the next day at 4:00pm.
