Men's Tennis Stunned by ONU, Ending 61-Match OAC Streak & Regular Season Title Run

ADA, Ohio -- An era of conference dominance ended on Friday for John Carroll Men's Tennis.

After reigning atop the Ohio Athletic Conference for the better part of the last decade, a long conference winning streak came to a close in Ada, Ohio.

The Blue Streaks were vanquished by the Ohio Northern Polar Bears in the final OAC affair of the regular season, 5-4.

The defeat broke a 61-match OAC winning streak for the Blue Streaks. And it came at the hands of the Polar Bears, who with the victory, claim the OAC Regular Season Championship. This marks the first season since 2014 that the Blue Streaks cannot claim at least a share of the OAC regular season crown.

The day began with a defeat at No. 3 doubles. Grant Sarnowski and Alvaro Rosabal stumbled to an 8-4 defeat to open doubles play. Thankfully, the Blue Streaks bounced back quickly at No. 1 doubles. Gustavo Garcia and Mark Beebe snatched an 8-2 victory at the No. 1 slot.

In what became the rubber match for doubles play, the Blue Streaks stumbled at No. 2 doubles. Kevin Wacnik and Logan Langovsky fought an impassioned match, but experienced an 8-5 defeat.

Ohio Northern picked up a singles win to edge towards the triumph. Aeneas Hines lost first at the No. 6 spot, 6-0, 6-0. ONU upped its lead to 3-1.

Gustavo Garcia got JCU on the board in singles play with a swift 6-1, 6-1 conquest at No. 1 singles. But ONU responded with a No. 4 singles win, as Wacnik suffered a 6-2, 6-4 setback. Suddenly, JCU was on the precipice of defeat.

And at No. 5 singles, the Polar Bears got their win, in a 3-set thriller. Sarnowski lost his opening set, 4-6, before roaring back to a 6-0 set two win. In the third set, his foe got the better of him in a 6-2 conquest, giving Ohio Northern its 10th crown in program history, the first since 2013.

Mark Beebe won his match at No. 3 singles. His foe relented and retired, as Beebe led the third set 3-2. Beebe dropped the first set, 3-6, before earning a 7-6 win in the second set via a 7-4 tiebreaker.

Logan Langovsky also won a marathon match at No. 2 singles. He lost the opener, 4-6, before rising in the second and third sets with identical 6-3, 6-3 results over Vinh Thai.

JCU drops to 8-8 overall, 5-1 in OAC play. John Carroll will close out the regular season at Franciscan on Sunday, weather permitting.

Despite the loss, the Blue Streaks will still get an opening bye in the OAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed. JCU will play an opponent to be determined in the OAC Semifinals on Friday, May 6.
