Men's Tennis Outlasts Cardinals, Pushing into OAC Championship Match

MIAMISBURG, Ohio -- Excellence in singles ensures that John Carroll Men's Tennis has a shot to keep its streak alive.

The Blue Streaks came from behind to best Otterbein on Friday in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament. In the semifinal bout, the Blue Streaks notched a 5-3 win.

Rainy weather forced the match between John Carroll and Otterbein indoors to the South Regency Tennis Center. At first, the switch did not go well for the Blue Streaks.

John Carroll lost two of the three doubles matches, providing a treacherous start.

Nathan Palinkas and Grant Sarnowski were vanquished at No. 3 doubles in the first result of the day, 8-3. Mark Beebe and Gustavo Garcia remained hot with a strong 8-5 conquest at No. 1 singles, tying it at one.

But in the rubber match, in a 7-4 tiebreaker, Logan Langovsky and Kevin Wacnik stumbled to an 8-7 defeat at No. 2 singles.

Langovsky didn't need much time to bounce back, playing with a vengeance at No. 2 singles. He got his revenge, with a 6-1, 6-2 lead to tie the match. Mark Beebe needed a bit of extra time in the first set, 7-5, but cruised to a 6-1 win in the second set to fire JCU into the driver's seat at 3-2.

Garcia then took the Cardinals to the brink with a win at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-4. The Cardinals warded off elimination for a bit, as suffered a loss at No. 3 singles, 7-6 (7-4 TB), 6-4. But Sarnowski ensured the day belonged to the Blue Streaks, besting Will Newberry after losing to him in doubles, via a 6-1, 6-4 win.

With the conquest, the Blue Streaks punched a ticket to the OAC Championship match on Saturday. John Carroll will confront Ohio Northern in a 1 pm match, hopefully outdoors at the Lindner Family Tennis Center if the weather cooperates.

The Blue Streaks are going for a seventh straight OAC Championship.
