As is becoming custom, the John Carroll Men's Track & Field team split the squad this weekend.

The throwers attended the John Homon Open at Mount Union on Thursday and Friday, while the sprinters and jumpers headed to the Mason Spring Invitational, hosted in Fairfax, Virginia by George Mason University on Saturday.

There were a number of highlights this weekend for the Blue & Gold.

John Homon Open

Matthew Russo continued to shine on Thursday. The freshman came close to his PR in the Discus, hefting a throw of 45.63m for fourth, finishing only behind Division I and II competitors. Zach Szafarski followed with a tally of 40.28m.

Also on Thursday, Russo tallied a toss of 13.68m for eighth in the Shot Put. Zach Szafarski also competed, finishing with a best throw of 12.35m.

Szafarski turned around and flashed his skills again on Friday with an eighth-place finish of 48.97m in the Hammer Throw. Alec Gorman marked down a 31.93m.

Mason Spring Invitational

John Carroll's speedsters took to Fairfax, Virginia and posted some solid times in the DMV.

Mick Doyle starred in the 400m hurdles, beating out a host of Division I runners. The Chicagoan clocked in at 55.12, a PR by two seconds, just a week after setting a new personal best of 57.15. His effort places him in the top 20 in the event nationally.

The 100m featured a trio of Blue Streaks. Jimmy Kartsonas finished just outside of the finals, finishing just off a PR with a time of 11.18. Mark Zahren followed at 11.28 and Cam Klauke crossed at 11.37. Zahren (22.31) and Klauke (22.47) also took part in the 200m.

JCU's 4x100 relay collected fourth place in impressive fashion. Klauke, Doyle, Zahren, and Kartsonas combined for a time of 42.21, a top 20 time nationally, as well.

Corey Minton came close to his outdoor best in the triple jump. The Canadian hopped to 13.86m, finishing sixth for the day.
