Early Goal Sinks Women's Soccer at Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, Ohio – An early goal sunk the hopes of a Saturday night road win for John Carroll Women's Soccer.

The Blue Streaks dropped a road match at Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday, 1-0.

The non-conference affair did not get off to a very fortuitous start for the Blue Streaks. The Battling Bishops pierced the Blue Streaks' defense with skill just 98 seconds into the match.

Paige Neal played the ball from about 20 yards out towards the goal line. Maya Burlingame settled the ball on the left side, and centered it up the line. Jaz Brooker dashed in and slotted the ball home into the lower left side of the net.

And just like that in the second minute, the Battling Bishops held a 1-0 lead at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.

Alli Malinky and Emily Patrzyk responded by managing shots, but neither got on net. In the 11th minute, Ohio Wesleyan did get two shots on goal, but Juliana Kontul aced the tests.

Gabriella Walter tabbed a shot in the 13th minute, and OWU got the save. Patrzyk also got a couple shots, but neither reached the net. In the 23rd minute, she did get one on cage, but OWU turned it away.

Kontul stood strong in the 36th minute, keeping the deficit at one. The score stood at 1-0 OWU after 45 minutes of work.

The Battling Bishops came out of the gate swinging, with two early shots that Kontul would need to deflect out of harm's way. Grace Monnin responded with a shot on goal in the 53rd minute. John Carroll's offense continued to threaten as the half continued. A Claire Hollern cornerkick led to an Abby Smith shot, but the header went wide.

In the later moments, the teams traded shots. Kontul made a save in the 86th minute to preserve hope. With just four seconds on the clock, Patrzyk fired in a shot, but OWU provided an answer.

With the save, OWU preserved the clean sheet and a 1-0 win.

In all, it was a fairly even match, as JCU outshot OWU, 20-18. Kontul made 7 saves against 6 for the Battling Bishops. JCU had 14 fouls compared to 13 for OWU.

The Blue Streaks will look to get back on track Wednesday, as the Blue & Gold head out of town to face Pitt-Greensburg.
