Men's Soccer Drops a Heartbreaker to Calvin on McCarthy Weekend

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Many times, your opponent for Homecoming is a game against a lesser opponent. This year, that was not the case, as the Blue Streaks had a premier opponent scheduled.

John Carroll Men's Soccer welcomed the Calvin Knights on Saturday evening, with the visitors carrying a #10 ranking in NCAA Division III per the United Soccer Coaches poll.

The McCarthy Weekend game lived up to the hype, but Calvin spoiled the day for the Blue Streaks. A Calvin goal with 3:49 remaining broke a 1-1 tie, besting the Blue Streaks by a score of 2-1.

Calvin came out strong in the opening five minutes. In the fifth minute, Oliver Akintade possessed the ball in a tight window on the left side. Akintade then fired a perfect right-footed shot into the lower left side of the net for an early goal.

Brenden Moher and the Blue Streaks defense turned away another scary opportunity in the seventh minute. Moher stood tall again in the 13th minute.

Midway through the half, the Blue Streaks started to apply pressure after being on their heels for much of the start of the game. But a trio of quick corners did not result in any shots.

Calvin controlled the ball and the tempo for much of the half, stifling JCU's offense until Patrick Koenig got the Blue Streaks going. The junior forward tallied a couple shots on goal, which were the only ones of the half for JCU.

The start of the second half saw back and forth play. The Blue Streaks threatened with about 35 minutes to play, but the opportunity went for naught. But the Blue Streaks would not be kept off the board forever.

With just over 22 minutes left to play, the Blue Streaks went to work. Nicholas Ruggiero played a ball forward on the far side. Ben Brucken charged ahead from the right side, working his way towards the middle. The junior from Copley then squared it into Logan Penton. Calvin tried to corral it unsuccessfully, so Penton settled it. The Vermillion native quickly left-footed the ball into the left side of the net for the equalizer.

In the 71st minute, Calvin got a shot on net, but Moher properly responded. The Blue Streaks countered with more chances, but nothing came of it.

The 84th minute saw a very promising chance for Calvin, as the Knights had time and numbers. But Daniel Kalic was equal to the moment, as his slide tackle stopped what looked to be an extremely dangerous opportunity to break the tie. The ensuing Calvin corner went harmlessly out of play.

But a throw-in with time dwindling did not end as well. Mason Smith hurled a lengthy throw-in into the box to Collin Iverson, a 6'5 senior. The Naperville, Illinois native headed it to the head of Chris Schau, who sent it over the JCU defense for a wild tie-breaking goal with 3:49 to play.

The Blue Streaks looked to respond in the final minutes, but were unable to pull off a miracle goal.

With the defeat, John Carroll drops to 4-3-1 on the year. The Blue Streaks are back in action on Wednesday, heading to Penn State Behrend.
