Women's Basketball Roars Past Heidelberg for 3rd Straight Win

TIFFIN, Ohio – The Blue Streaks of John Carroll University took on the Student Princes of Heidelberg University in a road affair on Wednesday evening, the first game of 2023 for both teams.

The Blue Streaks defeated the Student Princes with a decisive final score of 84-49 in the Seiberling Gymnasium.

This win pushes John Carroll to an 8-4 overall record, including 3-2 in Ohio Athletic Conference play.

Ava Ryncarz was the first to put points on the board at 9:14 into the first quarter. With the successful layup, Ryncarz began the night strongly for the Blue Streaks. The two teams battled it out in the first 10 minutes of play. John Carroll rolled into the second quarter with a small 16-15 lead.

The Blue Streaks started to gain momentum in the second quarter. In the span of a minute in the middle of the quarter, Ryncarz and Jaylen Hoffmann hit 3-pointers to build the lead to eight, 29-21. After a pair of Maddie Pietrowski free throws, Ryncarz hit another triple to push the margin to double digits. The Blue Streaks did not look back from there. A late Olivia Giunta layup set the margin at 40-23 at the half. For the second quarter, John Carroll outscored the hosts, 24-8.

In the third quarter, the Blue Streaks continued to use their strength to win defensive and rebound battles. Points in the paint paved the way for John Carroll, helping to push the lead further. A late Carmen Heuker layup in the painted area set JCU ahead entering the fourth quarter, 60-39.

To start the fourth, Ryncarz nailed a 3-pointer, and Halle Landies added another one shortly after. In the later stages, the JCU bench got plenty of action, highlighted by Katie Zatta's first career 3-pointer and Carlie Beatty's first make from the field of her young career.

The Blue Streaks got outstanding performances by both Maddie Pietrowski and Ryncarz, with the stars putting up 18 points and 14 points on the board, respectively, accounting for 38% of the team's offense.

As a team, the Blue Streaks enjoyed significant advantages on the stat sheet in rebounds, points in the paint, and turnovers. The Blue Streaks also tallied a nice 31 points off the bench.

The Blue Streaks look to defend home court against the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern University in University Heights on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 4 pm in the Tony Decarlo Varsity Center.
